At the January 6 Fountain City Council meeting, no news was good news. Only one actionable item of business, the approval of consent agenda items, was considered. This includes the monthly financial information and regularly occurring items, such as approval of previous meeting minutes, and the council approved it unanimously.
The regular monthly Public Works’ report was also provided to the council. Rick Whitney discussed the December workload with regard to ongoing inspection and maintenance at the wastewater treatment plant. The city contracted with Whitney to assist Public Works Director John Hanson with the large scope of work, helping to maintain plant compliance with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
Last month, Whitney and Hanson concentrated on ultraviolet modules and replacing bulbs. The UV technology is utilized as a chemical-free disinfection process. The council reviewed photos of the targeted areas of the plant before and after work completion.
He also provided an update on the condition of one blower. According to Whitney, there was a previously noted possibility of an impeller being warped. Rather than order a new component, which can run upwards of $8,000, he was able to purchase the needed parts for $900. He apologized for not bringing the purchase to the council for review, noted it should have been, and stated he would do so in the future.
Mixer pumps are currently being worked on. A noticeable wobble in one was documented. A shaft will be looked over and a possible replacement may be needed.
