Volleyball: Post-Season Awards

November 27, 2023 by Paul Trende

It was a special year for area volleyball teams, both team-wise and individually. Mabel-Canton and Caledonia each made state. The Cougars were the SEC-East champions. Chatfield won the TRC. Fillmore Central was 1A runner-up. Grand Meadow and LeRoy-Ostrander shared the SEC-West. Spring Grove did not win anything per se, but went 22-7. Rushford-Peterson and Lanesboro both also … [Read more...]

November 27, 2023 by Paul Trende

All-Conference in cross country is determined by the TRC Meet, which occurred on October 17.  All the All-TRC kids were noted in the October 30 Fillmore County Journal Sports, but a few things could have elaborated on.  Making All-TRC on the boys side were LARPH’s Ryan Prinsen, Brennan Kunst, Aaron Ploetz, Isaac Rasmussen, Tyler Betthauser, Treyton Heyland and Hunter Rislov, … [Read more...]

Football: Falcons Fall to Springfield 22-12 in State Quarters

November 20, 2023 by Paul Trende

A year ago, on the same field in Jordan, Fillmore Central snuck by Lester Prairie 18-16 in the state quarterfinals to make the state semis and a game at U.S. Bank Stadium.  The same site at this year’s 1A state quarterfinal versus #7 Springfield (Section 3A Champ, 10-1) was not so kind to the #2 Falcons (Section 1A Champ, 11-0).  The beginning of FC’s fate being doomed could be … [Read more...]

The vote, which took place on November 7, asked the voters to revoke the district’s current referendum of $292.15 per pupil and replace it with a new one of $783.36 per pupil. The proposed increase was due to a number of factors … [Read more...]

Football: #2 Falcons Repeat as 1A Champs, Return to State

November 13, 2023 by Paul Trende

Fillmore Central school district existed for 29 years and boasted exactly zero state football berths (and a lot of lost section title games). But for the second straight year, Falcon football is headed to state. FC (1-seed, 10-0) withstood Kenyon-Wanamingo (3-seed, 8-2) and its physical running attack in posting 14-0 win in the 1A finals. The Knights’ first possession took 17 … [Read more...]

Football: Falcons Rally Past Goodhue to Third Straight 1A Final

November 6, 2023 by Paul Trende

For the third time in as many years, Fillmore Central football will play to go to state.  Their quarterfinal foe was a cakewalk but their semifinal game was a different story.  The #2 in Class A Falcons (1-seed, 8-0) easily handled Hayfield (8-seed, 0-8) by 41-14 final in the quarters.  FC led 41-0 at halftime.  Jayce Kiehne (2-46, 2 TDs rushing; 3-57, 2 TDs receiving) scored … [Read more...]

Cross Country: Chatfield’s Kivimagi Grabs Girls Title, Rakosnik Runner-up

November 6, 2023 by Paul Trende

It was a dramatic end to a race, from an individual perspective.  It was also a scary end.  Down the home stretch of the girls 1A cross country meet, it came down to the favorite, Cotter’s Sonja Semling, LFC youngster Autumn Rakosnik and Chatfield’s Lexi Kivimagi.  Semling, the two-time defending champion, was in first place heading to the last 300-meters or so.  But she would … [Read more...]

Football: 105-yard Pick Six Highlights #2 FC’s 28-16 Win Over K-W

October 30, 2023 by Paul Trende

Fillmore Central senior Jayce Kiehne is an explosive player, probably the most explosive in Section 1A. The fleet 6’3” 175- pounder, who missed the Falcons’ 2022 state football run per injury, used his dynamism to lead the Falcons (7-0, 7-0) past their last big test of this regular season, Kenyon-Wanamingo (6-1, 6-1). With 0:02 seconds left on the first half clock, trailing … [Read more...]
