The Spring Grove boys came in with a seven-game winning streak while Lanesboro had taken its last six games. The Lions used two scoring runs to prevail at home, 60-46, on Jan. 19, handing the Burros (9-4, 6-3 SEC) a critical third conference loss, while Spring Grove (10-1, 8-0 SEC) maintained a firm grip on the East Division race and extended its conference winning streak to 24 games and its winning streak versus Lanesboro to 20. Earlier in the week, the Lions had moved up two places to No. 12 in the Class A state rankings.
Three-time all-conference point guard John Prestemon and his Burro teammates were better prepared for the Lions’ aggressive defense than they were in the Lions’ 71-52 win at Lanesboro back in December. But finding good shots was still a challenge, and Lanesboro attempted almost as many shots beyond the 3-point arc (24) as they did closer in (28). Both teams shot a less-than-desired 25% from 3-point land, but the Lions dominated the paint with dribble drives (22 points) and post passes (17). They decisively outscored LHS in the lane, 45-20.
Prestemon scored a game-high 19 points, but he was the only Burro in double figures. Meanwhile, Spring Grove received 17 points from Tysen Grinde, 16 from Elijah Solum and 15 from Jaxon Strinmoen. Grinde, with a game-high 9 rebounds, was close to a double-double. Strinmoen had 3 assists with no turnovers. Caleb Griffin had team highs with 4 assists and 3 steals.
The ultimate 14-point spread came from a 7-point scoring run just before halftime and an 8-point spurt shortly after the break. There had been six lead changes and four tie scores before the Lions created an eight-point cushion at halftime, 33-25. After the quick start to the second half, Spring Grove maintained double-digit leads the rest of the way.
The Lion B-team also completed a season sweep to improve to 9-1.
