Ray Lange obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Ray Lange, age 82, of Spring Valley, Minn., died on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at his home in Spring Valley.

Ray Duane Lange was born in Fountain, Minn., on December 14, 1943 – the 14th of 15 children born to Harry and Nellie (Turnmire) Lange. He and his identical twin brother, Roy, were born two months premature, weighing about 4 lbs. each, and were kept warm with hot water bottles. In addition to an early arrival, their parents were even more surprised to discover that there were two of them! The family lived and farmed in rural Fountain, and later moved to Wykoff, where Ray attended school.

In 1964, Ray joined the United States Army. After enlistment in the military, he and Roy attended barber school in St. Paul. On September 30, 1967, Ray married the love of his life, Marilyn Martha Amanda Grunklee, in Claremont, Minn., To this union, three children were born: Dawn, Deanne and Daniel. In 1969, Ray and Roy both bought their barber shops on the same day — Ray in Spring Valley and Roy in Chatfield. Throughout the years, several newspaper articles showcased them, as well as a feature news story in Twin Cities KARE 11, Land of 10,000 Stories. Ray continued to work at his barber shop, Ray’s Hair Care, up until his passing. Along with cutting hair, Ray was also skilled in woodwork, upholstery, and clock and zipper repair. He loved conversation and enjoyed time with customers, the community, and his family.

In his spare time, Ray enjoyed watching squirrels, cracking walnuts, mowing his lawn, and dining out. He was also a lifelong Harley-Davidson enthusiast, having ridden one of his many motorcycles to and through every state in the continental United States. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Ray is survived by his children Dawn (Matthew) Feirer of Rochester, Minn., Deanne (Randy) Smith of Farmington, Minn., and Daniel (Shelley) Lange of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren Holly (Taylor) Chapman, Jordan Feirer, Elizabeth Feirer, Samuel Feirer, and Noble Adams; great-grandchild Owen Chapman, identical twin brother Roy (Kathy) Lange, sisters Vera Lange and Margaret Lex, brothers Jerry Lange and Lee (Diane) Lange, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Nellie, his wife Marilyn, siblings Willie Lange, Francis Lange, Bernadine Schmidt, Lawrence Lange, Orville Lange, Paul Lange, and three siblings at birth.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the First English Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, Minn., with Rev. Loel Wessel officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., on Friday, January 9, 2026, at First English Lutheran Church and will continue for one hour prior to the start of the service on Saturday.  Burial will be at Spring Valley Cemetery.

Oh man – this is such bad news. I’d stop and see Ray many times for a good laugh. Had our picture on the wall. One of a kind RAY. I will truly miss our visits.
