Trailing Lanesboro 20-16 in the fourth set, state-ranked No. 9 Spring Grove avoided a fifth set by winning 9 of the final 11 points to win the match, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22) and complete a season sweep of the Burros. It was exciting with three 25-22 set scores, but it was an inconsistent evening for both teams. It was a rare occasion in which the team with the most kills and most ace serves did not win the match. The Oct. 3 outcome was decided by errors, and the Lions prevailed by making fewer mistakes. Lanesboro outscored SG 56-52 with winning plays (kills, blocks, ace serves), but the visiting Burros also gave away 15 more error points, including 18 ball-handling miscues. Second-place Spring Grove improved to 18-3 and 9-1 in the SEC East Division. Third-place Lanesboro slipped to 11-12-1 and 6-4 in the division.

One exception to inconsistency was the Lions’ closing 9-to-2 run with three kills on five attacks plus a pair of ace serves. The Burros had looked best with a great five-kill, two-ace rally that fell just short in the second set. Trailing 22-14, Lanesboro scored eight of the next 10 points to get back within two points at 24-22 before falling 25-22.

For SG, Addyson McHugh scored with 15 kills, 2 blocks and 2 ace serves. Kenadee Gerard put away 11 kills along with 2 ace serves. Maggie Lile served 21 for 21 with 2 aces. Kendal VanMinsel served 2 aces on only a dozen serves (12 for 12).

Lanesboro’s Kaci Ruen had 19 kills, 5 ace serves and 17 digs. Jessie Schreiber added 9 kills and 24 digs. Jensyn Storhoff contributed 5 kills, 10 set assists and16 digs.

Set one (LHS wins 25-22) was tied nine times, last at 20-20, before the Burros prevailed with a kill and a final ace serve along with

three Lion errors.

Set two (SG wins 25-22) saw SG lead most of the way, by as many as eight points before the Burros best stretch of play go them back within two points at 24-2.2.

Set three (SG wins 25-19) was the only one that did not go down to the wire, but it was tied at 16-16 before six kills (five by McHugh) gave SG a 2-sets-to-1 lead in the match.

Set four (SG wins 25-2) saw the Lions lead early by as many as five points before the Burros rallied to lead 20-16. A fifth set appeared imminent, but there were no SG errors through the final 11 points. Tied at 22-all, a Burro ball-handling error and a pair of McHugh kills ended the hard-fought match.

The Lion B-team (10-0) also completed a season sweep of Lanesboro 2-0 (25-9, 25-15). The C-team (7-2) did as well but needed a third set in this rematch, 2-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-10).
