Houston girls basketball has controlled the SEC-East as of late, winning or sharing the last four division titles. That run might be over. Lanesboro, thanks to a second win over the ‘Canes, has seized the division. The Burros (3-1, 8-4) and Houston (5-2, 8-4) entered the contest as the only two East teams plus-500. Trailing 10-7, Lanesboro went on a 15-2 run to lead 22-12. The edge was 27-14 at halftime. Houston pushed multiple times in the second. Olivia Beckman hit four of her five three’s. Sydney Torgerson scored 12 points in the first six minutes. Houston got as close as 33-32, only for Burro 8th grader Jensyn Storhoff to score five straight (38-32). After a Beckman three (38-35), Lanesboro spurted 11-2 to lead 49-37. A 10-2 Houston run in the final three minutes cut the lead to 51-47. The ‘Canes had the ball too, but turned it over. Kaci Ruen then got a press break bucket. Lanesboro went ahead 53-47. Taller, with more balanced scoring, the Burros prevailed 54-47. K-Ruen led the way with a game-high 22 points (8-14 FGs, 6-9 FTs). Storhoff (12 pts, 5-7 FGs) also hit double figures. Malia Tessum (8 pts, 4 asts), Brielle Ruen (7 pts, 4 rebs, 3 stls), and Jessie Schreiber (3 pts, 9 rebs, 4 asts) helped. Torgerson (16 pts, 5 rebs) and O-Beckman (15 pts, 5-12 threes, 5 rebs) led Houston. After 12 quick second half points, Torgerson was held scoreless. She battled foul trouble. Priya Kingsley added 9 (pts), 4 (rebs), and 4 (asts). Lanesboro won the free throw line (9 of 17 to 4 of 5). They also made two more field goals (20 of 50 to 18 of 51) but two less threes (5 of 17 to 7 of 21). Lanesboro also beat L/P and Houston won its two other games (See Girls Basketball). Bret Klaehn’s Burros (4-1, 10-4) lead the East over the ‘Canes (5-3, 9-5). Houston swept the previous six season series.
