Funeral services for Harry G. VanTries will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley, with Pastor Joe Haynes officiating. Burial will take place in the Spring Valley Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday September 9, 2025, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley.
Harry G. VanTries, age 99, formerly of LeRoy and Spring Valley died Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the Minnesota State Veterans Home in Preston, Minn.
He was born September 10, 1925, in Glenwood, Minn., to Guy and Nina Bell (Cleveland) VanTries. He attended country school through the eighth grade and entered the United States Army serving during World War II serving in the South Pacific. On November 30, 1954, he was united in marriage to Shirley Smith in Spring Valley and to this union four children were born Guy, Scott, David and Kimberly. Harry worked as a mechanic for John Deere in LeRoy and for Johnson Chevrolet in LeRoy before working as an owner operator with Atlas Van Lines. Harry was also a hobby farmer and enjoyed reading, listening to old country music, putting together puzzles and collecting model trains. He was a member of the LeRoy American Legion and was a member of a model train club in Grand Meadow. Harry was also known for his dry sense of humor.
Harry is survived by his children Guy (Lisa) VanTries of Swatara, Minn., Scott (Cheryl) VanTries of Rochester, Minn., David (Lorinda) VanTries of Spring Valley, Minn., and Kimberly (Kenneth) Holmen of LeRoy, Minn.; nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three siblings: Marjorie Teare of Waterloo, Iowa, Janet (Loren) Hove of Spring Valley, Minn., and Richard (Judy) VanTries of Crosby, Tex.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley in 2013, a grandson, Jeffrey, in 2021; and four siblings: Lucille VanTries, Donald (Dorothy) VanTries, Lawrence (Ann) Vantries and Frances VanTries.
