March 17, 2026 by Fillmore County Journal Leave a Comment

Doug Bergery obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Douglas “Doug” Glen Bergey, was born on August 17, 1967, in Decorah, Iowa. Doug was the youngest child of Merle and Eloise (Thompson) Bergey which lovingly earned him the title “The Baby” courtesy of his siblings.

On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Doug was reunited with his heavenly family, surrounded in the warmth of endless love at his home in Forest Lake, Minn.

Doug grew up on his family’s farm near Canton, Minn., and graduated from Mabel-Canton Schools. Doug continued his education, attending Winona State University where he received a degree in history and began working as a substitute teacher in area school districts. Later, Doug found his true calling as he returned to Winona State University to major in special education. This decision became a significant force in Doug’s life and the life of his students. He served as a special education teacher for the Kingsland School District in Spring Valley, Minn., dedicating 25 years of valuable mentorship. Doug was a teacher who put his heart and soul into guiding his students to see their personal possibilities, while remaining that teacher who was impossible to forget. Upon Doug’s retirement, he continued in his chosen career, working as a substitute teacher in the Forest Lake School District.

Doug met his “sweets” Debbie (Christiansen-Nyman) Bergey who complemented his life, becoming his loving wife. Doug and Debbie were master travelers, appreciating time with each other at area weekend markets promoting their business, “Shirt Off Your Back” or  exploring historical sites, visiting stadiums and sporting events, enjoying concerts and spending quality time with family and friends. Together, Doug and Debbie created wonderful adventures, discovering unique treasures along the way to preserve a memory of each journey. One trip out West provided a special highlight for Doug when he had the honor of walking his niece, Celeste, down the aisle on her wedding day. Doug also enjoyed many expeditions with his lifelong friends, sharing a profound bond of brotherhood and loyalty for one another that continues today with their love and support for Debbie.

Doug was a huge sports fan and avid collector of sports memorabilia, attending the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, and the US Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minn. Doug was determined to be successful in contacting and personally meeting numerous sports legends. He would share these accomplishments through countless motivational stories, proving what he believed and taught every day; that each goal is within reach for everyone. Doug’s lifetime interest in sports extended to the Thursday night bowling league, playing softball summer leagues, coaching, fantasy drafts and attending his nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews events. Doug was a proud uncle and always cheered the loudest with “Fire in the belly and love in his heart!” Doug had a special connection with all his grandkids and cherished the time they spent together. He can be described as a fun and selfless person who was happiest when the people around him were having fun and happy too, with the simple reminder that “life doesn’t have to be perfect to be wonderful.”

Doug is survived by his wife Debbie and her children: Aron (Mariah) Christiansen of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Melissa (Wade) Quale of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren: Carson, Landon, Natalia Christiansen, and Cameron and Keegan Quale; his loving Huskimo, Willie; two sisters: Diane (Steve) Allbee of Dunn Loring, Va., Danette (Tim) Daniels of Waconia, Minn.; three brothers: Donnie (Deb) Bergey of Canton, Minn., David (Karen) of Harmony, Minn., Dean (Marsha) of Harmony, Minn.; three sisters-in-law: Patricia Opitz of New Brighton, Minn., and family; Sharon (Jerry) Dufeck of Shoreview, Minn., and family; and Betty (Bernie) Knuth of Modesto, Calif., and family; nieces and nephews: Missy (Greg) Cappucci, Shelly (Mark) Maguire, Jeremy Bergey, Brock Bergey, Shawn Bergey, Shara (Paul) Dols, Jaime Bergey, Brandon (Kati) Bergey, Brady (Kelly) Bergey, Kristina (Dan) Bess, Celeste (Justin) Mueller, Dillon (Jacey) Bergey, Channing (Taylor) Cole, Payton Bergey and Tyler Daniels; 25 great-nieces and great-nephews,  numerous friends and extended family, along with the community of Spring Valley, co-workers and students.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Merle and Eloise Bergey, his brother Dennis Bergey, his infant sister, his grandparents Glen and Gladys Bergey and Larney and Eldora Thompson, one brother-in-law, Stan Opitz; and Doug’s eternal best friend, Yeti.

A visitation and time of remembrance honoring Doug will be held at Henrytown Lutheran Church rural Canton, Minn., on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 3:30-8 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held at the church on Saturday, March 21, 2026, beginning at 11:30 a.m., with burial in the church cemetery. The family is suggesting wearing your favorite sports attire in honor of Doug’s love of sports. Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel, Minn., is assisting the family with arrangements.
