Lions Top Larks in Early SEC Matchup A year ago, Spring Grove’s girls lost just once in winning the SEC title, to Grand Meadow 59-56. In an early notable SEC match-up, Taylor Elton’s Lions redeemed said defeat versus the Larks. The Lions shot 50% from the field, led 30-24 at half, began the second half with a 9-0 run, and led by double-digits thereafter in posting a 64-49 … [Read more...]

Warriors Top Lourdes in Early 1AA Showdown A year ago, Rochester-Lourdes beat Caledonia 61-59 in a 1AA semifinal on the way to the Eagles winning the Section 1AA title. To open this season, the teams squared off and the Warriors extracted revenge, riding their defense, and senior Josie Foster, to a season-opening marquee win. Scott Sorenson’s group controlled things from the … [Read more...]

#3 Fertile-Beltrami Finds Wright Answer Versus #5 L-O/L/P For three-plus quarters, it was literally back-and-forth. In a state semifinal contest at U.S. Bank Stadium, #5 LeRoy-Ostran-der/Lyle/Pacelli (South 1-seed, Section 1 Champ, 12-0) and #3 Fertile-Beltrami (North 2-seed, Section 6 Champ, 11-0) matched each other score for score. But then in the final 2-plus minutes of … [Read more...]

Post-season Awards It was another big year for area volleyball teams. In the Three Rivers Conference, two teams made state. Chatfield (10-0, 29-6) won their second straight league title, the Section 1AA title, and finished fourth in St. Paul in their first ever appearance. Fillmore Central (8-2, 18-17) tied for second place in the league but won the Section 1A title and also … [Read more...]

Said group helped lead the Gophers on a splendid 29-6, 1AA champ, state 4th place run. Photo by Paul Trende

Chatfield Takes Fourth in First State Appearance They fell short of their dream, a state championship. Highly ranked all season, Chatfield Gopher volleyball had every right to think it could have contended for and win the Class AA title. But they came up a smidge short in a five-set loss in the semifinals, their only five-set affair of the year. And they were out of steam in … [Read more...]

The Gophers rolled the Cobras in the regular season 33-6. But with … [Read more...]

Football (11/11)

Kingsland football is the Section 1 9-Man runner-up after falling to Leroy-Ostrander/Lyle/Pacelli 38-27. It was a tough end for the Knights, but their seniors (and others) have helped the program to back-to-back section title games after over two decades without one.

#5 Cardinals Use Fourth Quarter to Down Kingsland, Make State Looking to defend their Section 1 9-Man crown, Kingsland (3-seed, 8-2) never trailed versus #5 in 9-Man LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle/Pacelli (1-seed, 10-0) until the fourth quarter. It took a long fourth down touchdown pass to finally put the Cardinals ahead, as L-O/L/P won its second Section 1 9-Man title in four years. … [Read more...]
