A Decade’s Worth of Sports Part VII

May 25, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Lexi Chase

With the spring season shorter than others, the Journal Sports Director has less opportunities to form opinions on softball players.  Stats overall are also incomplete.  And thus a carefully done top 20 is tough to do.  Only an unofficial ranking will precede each player.  Below are the softball players who stood out over the past decade.  Players who missed a season aren’t … [Read more...]

Fillmore County Journal - A Decade of High School Baseball

With the spring season shorter than others, the Journal Sports Director has less opportunities to form opinions on all players over the years. And thus their will not be a top 20 for baseball. Below are those players who stood out over the past decade. Thanks to Coaches Brian Baum, Jordan Aug, Dakotah Rostad and Karl Urbaniak, former coaches Keith Larson, Jamie Fenske, and Dan … [Read more...]

A Decade’s Worth of Sports Part II

April 20, 2020 by Paul Trende

Football had the unique aspect that five of the seven Journal-covered schools all were coached the entire decade by the same guys.  In volleyball, only Lonnie Morken accomplished the feat as a pure head coach.  The volleyball All-Decade team is 20 deep.  Those listed had to be covered by the Journal Sports.  Those whose careers spanned just into 2010 are less regarded.  … [Read more...]

A Decade’s Worth of Sports

April 13, 2020 by Paul Trende

By Paul Trende In December of 2010, the Fillmore County Journal expanded to include area high school sports coverage.  This past winter season marked the tenth year of the Journal Sports.   With spring activities looking like a wash and having entered into a new decade, the Journal will present All-Decade teams relating to each sport.  Those listed had to be covered by the … [Read more...]

March 30, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports - High School Basketball

1st Team Mikkel Schutte (6’4” Sr. F/C Houston): The Hurricanes rangy stat-stuffing double-double machine, Schutte had a stellar senior year, putting up the extremely rare stat line of 20.5 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 5.3 APG, 2.5 SPG, and 3.7 BPG.  Led his team in all five categories.  In SEC-league games, finished top three in all five (1st rebounding/blocks, 3rd … [Read more...]

Falcons Fall in State Quarterfinals

March 23, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore Central Schools

It will be a long remembered season.  Fillmore Central’s girls’basketball took on its first ever state tourney.  But the ending will be more memorable for reasons not sporting.  FC’s girls trekked to Minneapolis to play basketball.  The Falcons (22-8) drew tournament 3-seed, #4 in state Henning (28-2).  Before the teams even took the court, it was announced all consolation and … [Read more...]

10th Annual Girls All-County Team

March 23, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports - High School Basketball

1st Team Ellie Buchholtz (5’8” junior G/F, Kingsland): Arguably the SEC’s best all-around talented player, led Kingsland in scoring (19.4 PPG), assists (4.3 APG), and steals (3.1 SPG) while finishing second in rebounding (6.7 RPG).  Said numbers (save rebounding) all exceeded Sister Lauren as a senior.  Ellie scored in double digits in all but two games while hitting … [Read more...]

Falcon GBB Clinches First Ever State Berth

March 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Blooming Prairie (21-5) came into the 2019-2020 Section 1A title game ranked #9 and the top seed.  They put it on Hayfield in the 1A semis 62-33.  Fillmore Central (21-8) came in unranked and seeded second.  They nipped GM 43-41 in the semis.  The Blossoms and Falcons were the last two teams left standing in a very open 1A field (given Goodhue’s departure to Class AA).  The … [Read more...]

All-TRC Wrestling Team

March 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports - High School Sports - Wrestling

It was a solid year for wrestling in the county.  Chatfield put together another excellent season, posting a win over the eventual section champion and sending three guys to state.  LARP had some strong guys in the lower weights and got a state entrant.  FCLMC, for the first time in many years, fielded a full unit and thus picked up a bunch of wins.  Six Gophers and a pair of … [Read more...]

Young Trojans Fall in Quarters

March 16, 2020 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - Fillmore County Sports - High School Basketball

Only one Journal-covered boys basketball team made it out of the Round of 16 of their respective section tournaments.  It wasn’t a shock it was R-P, but the section four cast will not include the Trojans.  Maybe in a couple years, when this young Trojan group matures, their game versus Hayfield will be just a blip.  Hopefully, this season will just be a blip, as it’s been … [Read more...]
