The 2021-2022 wrestling season begins with Caledonia/Houston joining the Journal coverage group. Five teams are now under the Journal Sports umbrella; Cal/Hou, GMLOS, LARP, FCLMC, and Chatfield. Combined, those squads have 11 Super-Section final four slash state qualifiers returning. Chatfield should again be strong as a team. Cal/Hou returns the most state qualifiers. LARP has a larger group of seniors. GMLOS will have to rebound after graduating a bunch of seniors. FCLMC will look for team and individual improvement.

Chatfield had an excellent campaign last year. The Gophers ended the regular season with big wins over D-E and Z-M, splitting the TRC title with the Eagles. Matt Mauseth’s group earned 1A’s #1-seed, but they fell to the Cougars 37-30 in the semis. The Gophers finished at 23-2. Chatfield graduated one of its all-time best wrestlers in four-time state entrant, 2021 170-pound state champion Seth Goetzinger (33-0, over 150 career wins). A.J. Karver (220), a two-time state entrant and 2021 Super-Section champion (17-4) also graduated, as did state qualifier Tate Karver (152 > 3rd at Super-Sections, 26-7). But Gopher wrestling still has horses in the stable, as three state qualifiers return. Senior Grady Schott (182) heads the list as he was Super-Section champ last year. He progressed all the way to the state finals, where he ended as 182-pound state runner-up (31-1). Classmate Campbell Berge (195 > 26-7) also qualified for state by taking third at Super-Sections, as did Kail Schott (So. 138 > 25-7), who took fourth at Super-Sections. From there, Ben Carrier (Fr. 113, 21-8) and Carson Rowland (Fr. 120, 21-10) return after making it to Day 2 of sections. Gage Bartels (So. 106, 22-6), Jack Dornack (So. 126, 9-9), Luke Carrier (Jr. 145), and Caden Nolte (Sr. 285, 13-9) each wrestled Day 1. Nathan Allen (So. 126), Sulley Ferguson (Jr. 152), Thad Evans (Jr. 152), and Miles Mulhern (So. 195/220) are other key returnees. The Gophers start the year “Lean and Mean.” Bartels (#6 at 113), K-Schott (#9 at 160), G-Schott (#1 at 182) and Berge (#6 at 195) are ranked. Chatfield opens at the GMLOS triangular (also with Cal/Hou). They have the FCLMC, Lake City, and J-W-P tourneys. They have three home triangulars (Aquinas & JWP, PEM & St. Charles, LARP & La Crescent/Hokah).

Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland also had an impressive year last season. Randy Smith’s Bulldogs went 30-5. They were trying for their second straight 1A title, but lost a trio of state-ranked guys from their line-up (contact tracing) before the section final with Z-M and fell 50-15. Last year’s crew was senior-dominated. The Bulldogs two state placers were both seniors. Anthony Romero (28-3) was the 106-pound Super-Section champ and state 3rd place finisher. Rece Voigt (39-3) was the 152-pound Super-Section champ and state 4th place finisher. Additionally, state qualifiers Christian Jacobson (170 > 3rd at Super Sections, 37-5) and Daniel Smith (160, 4th at Super-Sections 35-8) were seniors, Cameron Sneed (195, 31-8) and Noah Sayles (#5 at 220, didn’t compete at sections) too. Coach Smith does have a few key pieces back. Cohen Wiste (Jr. 126 > 3rd at Super Sections, 37-8) was a state qualifier. Donovan Felten (Sr. 152) was state ranked, but didn’t wrestle at last year’s sections (contact tracing). Aiden Quintana (Jr. 113, 23-12) made Day 2 of sections while James Jacobsen (Jr. 120, 25-11) and Braxton Wiste (So. 132, 22-15) were mainstays in the line-up. Cole Sheely (106) got some action as well. GMLOS uniquely has multiple girls in their program. The Bulldogs are #8 to start the year. C-Wiste (#6 at 138) and Felten (#3 at 160) are ranked. GMLOS has weekend excursions to Woodbury, South Winn, FCLMC, Rogers, Park-Cottage Grove, Stewartville, and Wisconsin Dells. They have just two home meets, the first a triangular in Grand Meadow (Cal/Hou & Chatfield), the second in Adams with La Crescent/Hokah.
The Caledonia/Houston Warriors went 9-18 overall last year, losing to GMLOS 46-22 in the 1A quarters. But Coach Shay Mahoney had some very good wrestlers. Four of those guys return led by senior Brandon Ross. Ross was the Super-Section champion at 120. He then proceeded all the way to state champ (31-0), the only Journal 11 returning titlist. Three other Warriors made it to the Super Section final four, or qualified for state. Isaac Blocker (So. 132, 23-6) and Tucker Ginther (Jr. 138 > 22-5) took third while Owen Denstad (So. 126 > 22-7) took fourth at Super Sections. The foursome should give Cal/Hou a great start in most matches. From there, Braxton Lange (Fr. 113), Cory Scanlan (Jr. 145), Bronson Knutson (Jr. 152), Eric Mauss (Jr. 160 > 14-14), and Ayden Goetzinger (Jr. 195, 11-9) were parts of the regular line-up, including wrestling Day 1 of sections. Gavin Plantz (113), Alex Weinbender (160), and Tyler Jennings (182) are three other notable returnees. The Warriors are down Will Allen (8th grader 106 > 14-10), a Day 2 of sections maker, out with an injury. Ross (#1 at 126), Denstad (#9 at 132), and Blocker (#3 at 138) start the year ranked. The Warriors have weekend tournaments/duals at Western Dubuque, La Crosse (Bi-State), Cresco (Crestwood), and K-M. They have home duals with Decorah and Waukon, a home triangular (D-E & K-W), and a home quad (Chatfield, Glenwood City, Goodhue).

The Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson Screamin’ Eagles posted a middle of the road record a year ago. Tim Tekautz and Darrin Hegland’s group went 16-14 overall, losing to Lake City 46-21 in the 1AA quarters. LARP had a trio of Super-Section top four finishers (or state qualifiers). Carter Jonsgaard (126 > 29-7, 3rd at Super Sections) was one of those guys, but the two-time state qualifier graduated. Fellow former state qualifier Gable Speltz (152 > 27-7) also graduated. But Tyler Kreidermacher (Sr. 113 > Super-Section 3rd, 31-4) and Jordan Zibrowski (So. 120 > Super-Section 4th place, 26-9) each made the top four of Super Sections, thus qualifying for state. They are the S-Eagles top returnees. From there, Spencer Nelson (8th grader 106), Titan Tekautz (So. 132), Wyatt Laumb (Sr. 138), Brennan Corcoran (Sr. 160, 18-16), Collin Klug (Sr. 170, 17-12), Jacob Meyer (Sr. 195 > 17-16), and Brock Frisch (Sr. 285 > 14-12) all wrestled Day 1 of sections, but didn’t advance. Quintin Betthauser (Fr. 132), Aaron Prinsen (Sr. 160), and Tyler Kryzer (Sr. 195) are three other key returnees. LARP has 11 seniors. Their schedule includes tournaments in Faribault, Harmony (FCLMC Holiday), and PEM. They have three home triangulars (Cal/Hou & Century, GMLOS & W-K, Cal/Hou & PEM).

The Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton wrestling team will look to improve. Blaise Sass’s group went 8-16 overall, losing to Dover-Eyota 63-13 in the 1A quarters. The Wolves typically got close to filling out a complete line-up a season ago, but only one wrestler made Day 2 of sections. Cale Anderson (138 > 15-10) was that one guy, but he graduated. Twin brother Caden Anderson, a former state entrant, also graduated (though he didn’t wrestle at sections per injury). FCLMC returns five guys who wrestled Day 1 of sections in Kane Larson (8th grader 106 > 14-13), Connor Wingert (So. 120), Kyle Daniels (So. 126), Boston Wright (So. 145), and Bodey Wright (Sr. 170). Rowan Lieb (Fr. 113), Cole Sass (Fr. 138), Wyatt Jensen (Sr. 170), Orion Sass (Jr. 170), and Oliver Hoeltzle (Jr. 195) are other key returnees. FCLMC has five home triangulars (D-E & LARP, Riceville & Triton, South Winn & Waukon, Cal/Hou & LCH, and LARP & Stewartville). They have weekend tournaments at La Crosse-Logan, PEM, Pine Island, Rochester-Century, and their own home Holiday Invite.

Gopher Girls Top SC and L-A, Move to 4-0
Chatfield girls basketball kept out ahead of the pack with a pair of wins the first full week of the regular season. The Gophers first took out St. Charles at home handily, 71-23. Six Gophers scored seven points or more and 12 of 13 girls to play got in the scoring column. Kara Goetzinger (11 pts) and Peyton Berg (11 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts, 4 stls) led the way. Zayda Priebe (9 pts, 4-5 FGs), Jaiden Zimmerman (8 pts), Tessa McMahon (8 pts, 5 stls), and Evy Goldsmith (7 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts) helped out. Chatfield then trekked to Lewiston and took out L-A 68-46. The junior forward Goetzinger scored a career-high 26 points (12-15 FGs). Berg (11 pts) and Zimmerman (10 pts) also got to double digits. McMahon added 9 (pts), 5 (rebs), and 3 (stls). Chatfield took control of the game in the second half, out-scoring the Cardinals 36 to 17. The score was 32-29 Gophers at intermission. L-A hit seven three to Chatfield’s four, but the Gophers made 27 two-point field goals to L-A’s 12. Chatfield scored 24 points off turnovers to L-A’s 8. With the wins, Brian Baum’s group improved to 2-0 in the TRC, 4-0 overall.

Tough Knight Road Trips Includes OT Win
Kingsland girls basketball’s first week of the regular season was denoted by three road games. Two were with teams that made the 1A final four last season. Steve Hauser’s group started with a game at Blooming Prairie, a re-match of last year’s 1A semifinal contest. It was a back-and-forth contest. BP didn’t score until the 11:25 mark of the first half, as Kingsland led 7-0. But the Blossoms led by as many as eight (28-20) in the half and 28-21 at intermission. In the second half, the Knights combatted BP’s height and zone defense with threes. They hit 11 for the game and eight came after intermission. A Shelby Beck trifecta at the 4:46 mark tied the game at 45, but Kingsland trailed 51-48 in the final minute. That’s when Anika Reiland took her turn hitting a three, tying the contest at 51-51 (0:25). Each team had a chance after that, but it went to OT. The extra period featured ties at 53 and 55. Audrey Webster hit a three to put the Knights up 58-55. With under 0:30 to play, Kingsland put it away when Reiland made one of two freebies, but Emily Miner came up with an offensive rebound. Reiland then again split at the line, making it a two-possession game at 61-57. BP responded with a turnover. They had 31 for the game. The Knights prevailed 63-57 in OT. The 5’5” Reiland led the way with a massive all-around game (14 pts, 3-6 threes, 14 rebs, 6 asts, 6 stls). Webster (16 pts, 4-8 three, 5 asts) led the Knights in scoring, all points after halftime. Beck (11 pts, 6 rebs) and Miner (6 pts, 7 rebs) helped. Kennedy Fenske had 6 points, but four in OT. Blossom senior guard Bobbie Bruns had a career-high 30 points including topping 1,000 for her career. The Knights offset a height disadvantage by hitting 11 threes to BP’s 4. Kingsland then beat Southland 62-37. Katelyn Hauser had a career-high 18 points (7-14 FGs, 3-6 threes). Reiland (10 pts, 10 rebs, 7 asts, 9 stls) stuffed the stat sheet. Webster (13 pts, 3-9 threes) and Miner (6 pts, 7 rebs) helped. Kingsland then fell to Hayfield by a 66-39 final. Threes were a big story (H: 9-23 > 39.1%. K: 1-9 > 11.1%). All six Vikings to score hit a three, led by Natalie Beaver (21 pts). Chantle Reiland (12 pts, 9 rebs), Miner (10 pts), and Reiland (9 pts, 6 rebs) paced Kingsland. They are 1-0, 2-1. The Vikings (3-0) were a 2021 1A final four team also, and so-far, this year’s 1A favorite.

Lark Girls Win First Two
The Grand Meadow girls basketball teams return a lot from last year. They should be a force in the SEC and Section 1A. Ryan Queensland’s group started the season with two wins. GM first easily took down neighbor LeRoy-Ostrander 64-12 in the season opener. Four Larks scored in double figures led by River Landers (18 pts, 9-14 FGs). Kendyl Queensland (14 pts, 9 rebs), McKenna Hendrickson (13 pts, 6 rebs), and Lauren Queensland (11 pts, 10 rebs) also got there. Sydney Cotton added 8 (pts), 4 (rebs), and 4 (asts). It was tough go for the Cardinals under new coach Cori Ronnenberg. Jordan Runde had 6 (pts) and 6 (stls) to lead their cause. GM then hosted 1A foe Fillmore Central. It was a game of contrasting statistics. GM had 29 turnovers to FC’s 14. That led FC to out-score the Larks in transition 11 to 2. But the Larks shot 46.3% (19 of 41) to FC’s 27.3% (18-66). GM hit 7 of 14 threes. FC was 4 of 18. The Larks also won at the free throw line, making 15 of 19 freebies (78.9%) to FC’s 2 of 11 (18.2%). Resultantly, GM took a 24-21 halftime lead and turned it into a 60-42 win. Hendrickson had a career-high (18 pts, 3-9 threes, 5-6 FTs, 5 rebs). K-Queensland (14 pts, 4-6 FGs, 5-6 FTs) and Landers (10 pts, 4-5 FTs, 6 rebs) hit double figures. L-Queensland added 8 (pts) and 5 (rebs). Abby Bothun (10 pts, 5 rebs) and Courtney Hershberger (8 pts) led the Falcons. GM improved to 1-0, 2-0. FC fell to 0-1, 0-2.
Hot Shots
Lanesboro’s girls beat Houston 57-52, a key early-season SEC-East score, as Kaci Ruen had 16 (pts) and 16 (rebs). But the Hurricanes went 2-1 on the week, beating M-C 56-27 and Alma-Pepin 81-44. Versus the Cougars, Priya Kingsley had 12 (pts) and 13 (stls). Versus Alma-Pepin, Kingsley had 21 (pts) and 12 (asts). Houston was 13 of 27 from deep in that game. Nicole Beckman had 18 points by hitting six threes. Sydney Torgerson had 19, 18, and 16 in the three games.
