February 5, 2024 by Paul Trende

Bartels and Alden Wrestling

With 12 wrestlers in the top two and seven bringing home titles, #1 in Class A Chatfield took first at the Lake City Tourney (255.5). Rival Dover-Eyota (185.5) was the nearest foe. Class AAA Lean and Mean squads Northfield (135.5) and Mayo (133.5) took third and fourth of ten teams. Javier Berg (114), Hunter Polikowsky (127), Gage Bartels (133), Carson Rowland (152), Kail Schott (189), Will Boelter (220), and Miles Mulhern (285) won titles. Berg won two decisions (8-1, 6-2) and by fall to go 3-0. The #1-ranked junior (26-4) won his 100th career match. Gage Bartels (#2 at 133) notched two pins before downing Westfield’s #1 at 139 Bo Zwiener (28-5) by 1-0 decision in the finals. The senior (21-7) was thus the tourney’s most outstanding wrestler. Mulhern went 3-0 with three falls. The #2-ranked senior improved to 26-5. Polikowsky (127 > won 16-0 tech fall, won 8-4 decision), #9 Rowland (152 > won fall, won 8-1 decision over Medford’s 18-2 Evan Schweisthal), top-ranked Schott (189 > won 10-4 and 6-1 decisions), and Boelter (220 > won two falls) each used a bye and two wins for their titles. Rowland improved to 25-7, Schott to 21-2. Jameson Priebe (107), Kaisen Johnson (121), Jack Dornack (152), and Ayden Miner (160) each went 2-1 to take second. In the finals, Priebe lost by 6-0 decision to Northfield’s Caley Graber (27-4), #5 Johnson by 5-3 decision to Raider Caden Staab (27-5), Dornack by fall to Mayo’s #6 in AA Calder Sheehan (21-1), and #6 Miner by 10-5 decision to Medford’s #3 in A Tommy Elwood (26-2). Nathan Allen (172) also went 2-1 in round robin format to take second, only losing to Winona’s Brady Lundgren by fall. Additionally, Ben Carrier (172) went 3-1 to take third. He fell to D-E’s #3 Landon Lehnertz (24-3) by 9-2 decision in the semis. Nine different Gophers have now won individual titles. Berg has four, Schott three, Bartels, Rowland, and Mulhern two. Chatfield also moved to 6-0, 11-1 overall, with a dual win over GMLOS 60-12 (see “Wrestling” for more).
