The last two years, Chatfield and Dover-Eyota wrestling had been feuding. Included was the Eagles nipping the Gophers 33-30 for the 2022 1A wrestling title in a bout decided at heavy-weight. The teams met up again, both ranked, D-E #2 (7-0, 17-2), Chatfield #9 (6-1, 9-2). The Gophers picked up their biggest win of the year. Chatfield never trailed and had the match secured after 195. There were two ranked-versus-ranked match-ups and another bout between 20-win wrestlers. In all three cases, Gopher guys wrestled up a weight. Javier Berg (#1 at 106) and Kaisen Johnson (113) gave Chatfield a 15-0 lead courtesy of a 16-1 tech fall and a first period pin to start the action. The teams then each put up nine points over the next four weights. Chatfield won 126 via a Hunter Polikowsky pin and 138 via an Ayden Miner (So. 17-8) 7-3 decision win over Damon Bye (Jr. 19-15). The first ranked-versus-ranked bout featured D-E’s #5 at 132 Bolton Thesing (Jr. 32-2) downing Chatfield’s #4 at 126 Gage Bartels (Jr. 22-6) by 4-3 decision (at 132). D-E also got a pin at 120. After 138, Chatfield led 20-9. Ben Carrier (So. 2-2) won an 11-7 decision over Talen Rabe (Fr. 11-7) at 145 to make it 23-9. But D-E has three #1-ranked guys in the upper seven weights. Brodie Kellen (Sr. 33-2), #1 at 152, downed Carson Rowland (So. 21-4), #8 at 145, but by 7-4 decision at 152 in the second ranked-versus-ranked match. Gavin Gust (Sr. 31-2), #1 at 160, then authored a 24-8 tech fall. Jackson Welsh (Jr. 12-6) followed with an 11-6 decision over Thad Evans (Sr. 12-10) at 170. Five of six middle weights going to decision, the Eagles pulled to down 23-20. Chatfield then got a pin by Nathan Allen (182) and a 18-3 tech fall by #2 at 182 Kail Schott (Jr. 23-2) wrestling up at 195 versus Aidan Gasper (Jr. 26-7). Said 11 points put Matt Mauseth’s group ahead insurmountably, 34-20. They forfeited 220 and 285, leaving the final 34-32 Gophers. D-E was without #5 at 170 Landon Lehnertz. Chatfield beat PEM 52-24 prior to the big match. Berg (106), Ryan House (120), Bartels (126), Alden Pearson (132), Miner (138), Rowland (145), Evans (160) and Schott (182) had pins. Jack Dornack (152) authored a 12-1 major decision. Over the past two seasons, matches between D-E and Chatfield have been tight. D-E won 37-21 and Chatfield 39-27 in 2020-2021. Last season, Chatfield won 35-31 and D-E 33-30. The top three in the TRC are now #3 Caledonia/Houston (5-0, 25-6), #8 Chatfield (7-1, 10-2), and #2 D-E (6-1, 17-3). Cal/Hou and D-E haven’t wrestled.
