Wrestling: #3 Warriors Top #2 Eagles in Key TRC Win

February 13, 2023 by Paul Trende

Caledonia/Houston senior Eric Mauss keeps top control over Dover-Eyota’s Will Halbakken in the teams’ key TRC wrestling dual. A battle of #2 D-E and #3 Cal/Hou was decided early, the Warriors started 25-3, and finished late; Mauss’ pin at 182 and an Ayden Goetzinger decision at 195 were the final touches on a 34-28 win that leaves Shay Mahoney’s Warriors the only league-unbeaten squad in the TRC.

After beating Chatfield in a TRC match in December, it was the next huge conference foe for Cale-donia/Houston wrestling; Dover-Eyota. Entering a triangular which also included FCLMC, the Eagles (6-1, 17-3) were ranked #2 in Class A and the Warriors (5-0, 25-6) ranked #3. D-E was probably poised to drop in the polls, as they fell to Chatfield. Nonetheless, the Warriors hosted the defending 1A champs in a big dual. Days earlier, Chatfield used its lower weights to build an early lead. A couple key upper weight wins then led the Gophers to their win over the Eagles. Caledonia/Houston did the same thing. After dropping 106 to decision (Bronson Shea over Aiden Burns 6-2), Shay Mahoney’s group won six straight. Three of the wins were decisions. Hunter Frank (113) beat Devon Bye 12-7. Braxton Lange (#5 at 120) beat Caden Haag 12-7. In the dual’s first ranked/ranked bout (132), #4 Owen Denstad downed #5 Bolton Thesing 9-3. Tanner (126) and Tucker (#2 at 145) Ginther also had pins in the span while Cory Scanlan (138) notched a 10-1 major decision over Damon Bye. Through 145, Cal/Hou led 25-3. But D-E has four top five guys and three #1s in their upper seven weights. At 152, #1 Brodie Kellen beat Isaac Blocker (#1 at 138) by a 9-3 decision in a battle of #1’s. Gavin Gust (#1 at 160) and Landon Lehnertz (#5 at 170) then went pin, 10-1 major decision. The Eagles closed to down 25-16. But Cal/Hou has enough strong guys up top. Senior Eric Mauss (182) notched a third period pin over William Halbakken. Ayden Goetzinger (#2 at 195) followed with a 10-3 decision over Aidan Gasper. Said victory put the Warriors up insurmountably, 34-16. D-E took the final two weights, 220 by fall, 285 (#1 Jackson Duellman) by forfeit. The Warriors grabbed the big win 34-28. Each squad beat FCLMC. Cal/Hou won 68-6. The Warriors took five forfeits; Burns (106), Lange (120), Tan. Ginther (126), Goetzinger (195), and Grant Ness (285). Tuck. Ginther (145) and Blocker (152) had pins. Frank (113) and Scanlan (138) scored 18-3 and 15-0 tech falls. Simon Seymour (160) won an 11-2 major. Said dual had four decisions. Denstad (132) topped Kane Larson 11-4 and Mauss went over Cole Sass 7-1 for Warrior wins. Oliver Hoeltzle (170) downed Aden Kulas 5-4 and Aaron Hutton (220) topped Tyler Jennings 6-2 for Wolves’ wins. C-Sass (182) won an 8-4 decision for FCLMC’s only win versus D-E. The Wolves (4-5, 8-7) forfeited five weights in a 74-3 loss. Caledonia/Houston (7-0, 27-6) has one more TRC dual left versus GMLOS. The Warriors lead Chatfield (7-1, 12-2) and D-E (7-2, 18-4) in the standings. On top of big team win, Isaac Blocker picked up his 100th win and Tucker Ginther picked up his 150th win. D-E won last year 52-26. In said match, Cal’s Lange fell to Haag by pin (113) a man-for-man flip-flop. Eagles Bye (120) and Thesing (126) each won early, as D-E led 18-4 after 126.
