Wrestling: Gophers Claim Another Tourney Title
For the fifth time this year, Chatfield’s Class A top-ranked Gopher male wrestlers won a team tourney title. At the Lake City Invite, Matt Mauseth and crew’s group (276.5) topped nearest foes, AAA teams Northfield (184) and Rochester-Mayo (167). LARP also competed (103.5), taking sixth (of 10). Seven Gophers won titles. Chatfield started with wins at 107, 114, 121, and 127. Top-ranked Jameson Priebe (30-2) used two falls to take 107, his team-best fifth title. He beat LARP’s Carter LaFee in the finals, who went 1-1 (won fall, lost fall) to take second. Ranked #3 at 114, Logan Pearson (26-4) used a fall and a 23-3 tech fall to grab his title. Ranked #3 at 121, Javier Berg (26-2) used two falls to grab his title. Ranked #5 at 133, Kaisen Johnson (wrestling at 127) used a fall plus 12-2 and 9-1 major decisions to record his title. Chatfield also took 152, 172, and 220 pounds. Top-ranked Carson Rowland (28-2) had two falls and a 18-3 tech fall over LARP’s Carter Cady to take 152. Cady made the finals via an 11-0 major and an 8-2 decision. Third-ranked Ben Carrier (25-4) authored two pins and a 17-4 major decision to take 172. Will Boelter (31-6) won two matches by fall to take 220. L-Pearson and Rowland won their fourth titles. Berg, Johnson, Carrier, and Boelter won their third. Chatfield guys have 35 individual titles this year. Layne Root (133 > won fall, won 7-2 decision, lost 4-1 decision), Hunter Polikowsky (139 > won fall, won 17-2 tech fall, lost 14-1 major decision to Northfield’s #8 in AAA Keith Harner) and #1 Ayden Miner (160 > won fall, won 8-0 decision, lost 14-13 decision to Northfield’s AAA #5 Zane Engels) each took second. Eighth-ranked Alden Pearson (145) went 3-1 to take third (losing 7-6 in four overtimes in the semis to LARP’s Quintin Betthauser). For LARP, Betthauser (145 > won fall, won 7-6 decision in four overtimes over #8 A-Pearson, lost fall to Northfield’s #5 Caden Staab) joined LaFee in taking second. Jaxson Johnson (139) and Zach Plank (195) each went 3-1 to take third.
Girls Wrestling: Gophers Top GMLOS at Century Tourney
Chatfield girls wrestlers had a busy Friday and Saturday in late January. On the 24th, the Gophers plus gals from FCLMC, LARP and GMLOS took on the Rochester-Century tourney. Chatfield (164.5) topped the Bulldogs (159.5) for first place with LARP (58) taking sixth and FCLMC (34) 12th of 14 teams. In the A-bracket, #3 Emily Bova (100 > won three falls including over GMLOS’ #10 Chloe Hubbard), Brynn Horsman (118 > won three falls), and Elle Eickhoff (142 > won two falls) each took first. Bova improved to 21-2, Horsman to 19-6, Eickhoff to 19-7. Kendyl Nolte (148 > won two falls, lost fall to Century’s #4 Eliana Callies) took second. Maizee Priebe (112) and Bryn Goetzinger (106) went 3-2 and 2-2 to take third. For GMLOS, Zoe Steinkamp (124 > won three falls) grabbed a title to improve to 24-11. Tenth-ranked Hubbard (110 > won two falls, lost fall to Chatfield’s #3 Bova), Paisley Schlee (106 > lost 20-8 major decision, won three falls), and #10 Brandy Christenson (112 > won two falls, lost 11-9 decision to W-K #1 Hayden Hawkins) each took second. Christenson is 20-4. Megan Owens (170) went 2-2 and took third. For LARP, Bobbie Wnuk (170 > won three falls, lost fall) took second. For FCLMC, Charlotte Ferrie (130 > won three falls) took first. She improved to 23-4. The Gophers then took on the 16-team girls state duals on January 25, taking 13th place, largely due to an incomplete squad (See “Wrestling” for more)).

Zac Gehling (160) and Drake Payne (189) won 13-3 and 15-1 major decisions); Stewartville 38, GMLOS 33 (The Bulldogs fell back 18-6 and never led, but tied the match 18-18 after 139. Christian Zibrowski (121) had a pin for the Screamin’ Eagles, Quintin Betthauser (145) won by forfeit, Carter Cady (152) and Zach Plank (189) by 15-0 tech falls, Michael Alexander (133) by 16-6 major decision, Nolan Happel (160) by 7-4 decision. Century Tourney (FCLMC (58) took eighth of 11 teams. Simley (185) topped Century (179.5) for first. Second-ranked K. Larson (172 > won 20-2 tech fall, won fall, lost 6-3 decision to Mount Horeb’s D-I #5 at 165 Eli Maier) took second. C. Sass (189 > won fall, lost fall to MH’s D-I #2 at 175 Eli Leonard, won 18-4 major decision, won 6-1 decision) took third. Meier is 29-1, Leonard 31-0)
Kasson-Mantorville “Bob Swalla” Duals > Caledonia/Houston 38, Byron 30 (The Warriors built a 38-21 lead after 189. W. Kohlmeyer (114) and W. Allen (152) had pins. Nolan Conway (107) and A. Burns (121) won by forfeit. B. Lange (139) and C. Allen (189) won 17-2 and 16-1 tech falls. M. Schmitz (172) won a 15-7 major decision. Cal/Hou forfeited 145 and 160); Cal/Hou 21, #4 in AA K-M 38 (Kohlmeyer (107), Burns (114), and Schmitz (160) had pins, C. Allen (215) won a 7-2 decision.
