Girls Wrestling: Chatfield Takes Second at Second State Dual Meet

In the second incarnation of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association girls dual championship, Chatfield had themselves a big event. Last year, they took 13th of 16. After a trio of hard-fought duals, the 8th-ranked Gophers wrestled for the state team title this year. In the Round of 16, Chatfield faced #9 Wadena-Deer Creek. The Gophers built a 21-0 early lead only to see it shaved to 21-16 after 136. But wins by Kendyl Nolte (155 > 15-0 tech fall) and #9 at 155 Eve Goetzinger (wrestled 170 > forfeit) gave the Gophers an insurmountable 38-22 lead. Forfeiting the final two weights, they won 38-34. Tenth-ranked Melody Ward (100 > fall) and Emily Bova (106 > 19-7 major) plus Maizee Priebe (112 > 17-0 tech fall) and Bryn Goetzinger (118 > fall) won the first four matches. Fourth-ranked Elle Eickhoff (142) added a pin. In the quarters, the Gophers face #1 Apple Valley. Chatfield won seven of the first nine matches. Out of the gate (100-pounds), #10 Bova pinned #6 Madilyn Trottier in a battle of ranked 106-pounders, the duals only ranked-ranked match. It was a key win. Ward (106 > pin), Priebe (112 > 16-0 tech fall), Kinley Manahan (124 > forfeit), #10 at 124 Brynn Horsman (wrestled 130 > 15-0 tech fall), Eickhoff (142 > fall), and Grace Finley (148 > forfeit) also had wins. The five and six-point wins allowed Chatfield to build an insurmountable 40-12 lead. Apple Valley won the final four matches (two falls, two forfeits). The Gophers slipped past the #1-seeded Eagles, 40-36. A-V’s lineup featured four ranked girls, including #1’s Cassandra Gonzalez (155) and Esperanza Calvillo (170). It put the Gophers in the semis against #5 Sauk Centre/Melrose. Again, the Gophers’ early weight supremacy built an unattainable lead. Ward (100 > pin), Bova (106 > 24-8 tech fall), Priebe (112 > pin), B-Goetzinger (118 > fall), and Horsman (124 > fall) won the first five matches for a 29-0 lead. Eickhoff (142 > pin) and Nolte (155 > pin) added wins. Sauk Centre/Melrose won six of the final eight weights including forfeits at 170 and 190. But it wasn’t enough. Nolte’s pin made the score 41-18 with three weights left. The Gophers prevailed 41-36 to make the state girls dual meet finals! There, the run ended against #6 Hastings. Not having a full line-up (few girls teams do yet) was a factor. Chatfield got wins from Bova (100 > 23-7 tech fall), Ward (106 > 12-2 major), and Priebe (112 > pin) for a 15-0 lead. The Raiders then won four in a row by fall to lead 24-15. Finley (142 > 13-7 decision), Eickhoff (148 > fall), E-Goetzinger (155 > pin) then got the Gophers three straight wins. They held a 30-26 lead heading to the final three weights. But with the Gophers not having anyone at 190 and 235, the dual was over. Hastings won the final three (major decision, two forfeits) to take the dual 40-30, take the state dual meet title. The Raiders won seven of 13 matches with six by six-point decision. The Gophers won six matches, three by six-point decision. For the tourney, Eickhoff (four pins), Bova, Ward, and Priebe each went 4-0. Chatfield’s coaches are Savannah Vold, Jason Goetzinger, Darrin Allen, and Ryan Priebe.
