Girls Wrestling: Ferrie, Eickhoff and Steinkamp Earn State Trips at 1/2 Meet
Area girls teams GMLOS, Chatfield, FCLMC and LARP were among those taking to the mats at Rochester-Century High School for the Section 1/2 individual wrestling meet. Nine Bulldogs, eight Gophers, three Wolves, and two Screamin’ Eagles competed to try to make state. In a tough meet featuring two of the state’s best girls sections, FCLMC’s Charlotte Ferrie, Chatfield’s Elle Eickhoff, and GMLOS’ Zoe Steinkamp lived to wrestle in St. Paul. Ferrie (29-6), just an 8th grader, posted two falls to make the 130-pound finals. Her trip to St. Paul was greatly bettered when, down 6-0 in the semis, #10 Ferrie came back to pin Northfield senior, #6 Lainey Houts (30-3). Ferrie then fell to Pine Island’s #3 Lauren Elsmore (30-3) by 15-6 major decision in the finals (with no true second match). Similarly, the state fate of Chatfield’s Elle Eickhoff was also majorly determined in the semis. After back-to-back falls to make it that far, Eickhoff pinned Cannon Falls’ Monette Otterness (22-5). The Gopher junior (28-8) then fell by fall to Apple Valley’s #1 Cassandra Gonzales (22-0) in the finals. Eickhoff also did not need to wrestle a true second. GMLOS’ Zoe Steinkamp (124) used three falls to make the title match, only to fall by pin to Apple Valley’s #1 Andrea Quinones (39-1). Steinkamp (31-12) then was down 4-0 in a true second match to PI’s Mallory Mohlke (21-9). From the top position to start the third period, the freshman turned Mohlke and secured a pin, and a trip to state. Teammate Kloe Meyer also wrestled to go to state. With just five gals in her weight class (235), #7 Meyer won by fall, lost by fall to Byron’s #3 Madi Hamilton (28-4), then fell by fall to Apple Valley’s Mila Carnahan. Meyer took third. GMLOS also got a fourth-place finish from #10 Brandy Christenson (112). The sophomore (26-8) went 4-2 with three pins and a 7-2 decision win. She was twice pinned by Farmington’s #8 Alexandra Thovson (18-12). LARP’s Bobbie Wnuk (25-9) placed third in the 11-gal 170-pound weight class. The sophomore lost in the quarters by fall to Byron’s Kadie Augenstin (22-16) before ripping off four straight falls, winning a third-place match. Augenstin fell in the finals to Mayo’s Chelsea Rodriguez (18-4) by fall, leaving Wnuk without a true second match.
In addition to Eickhoff, Chatfield had four fifth place finishers, #3 Emily Bova (29-5), Bryn Goetzinger (27-9), Brynn Horsman (28-9), and Kendyl Nolte (21-10). Bova (100) made the semis with an 18-3 tech fall and a pin, only lose 17-2 and 15-0 tech falls. The junior finished with a pin of Farmington’s #10 at 106 Lilliane Stevens (22-9). Goetzinger (106), Horsman (118), and Nolte (145) each took the same route to their finishes, losing in the quarters and consolation semis, going 4-2 for the tourney. Goetzinger had two pins plus 18-3 and 15-0 tech fall wins. The 7th grader lost first to Z-M’s Macy Schaefer (22-10) and second to Prior Lake’s #5 Angelica Benitez (16-5), both by fall. Horsman had three pins and a 20-3 tech fall for wins. The juniors’ two losses were to PI’s Caroline Sems (20-13) by 18-8 major decision, then to Apple Valley’s #8 Hanah Schuster (32-9) by 20-4 tech fall. Nolte notched all four of her wins by fall. She fell to Apple Valley’s Jemima Mukete (21-13) and to Lakeville-North’s Paityn Johnson (18-3) by fall. Last year, Diann Smith and Christenson made state for GMLOS, Katie Whelan and Vivienne Hoeltzle for FCLMC, Lauren Honken for LARP, and Chloe Berg for Chatfield. Smith, Whelan, Honken, and Berg graduated . Hoeltzle missed most of this season to an illness and did not compete at sections.
