For the third time in as many weeks on the season, Chatfield wrestling battled in a tough dual.  For a third time, it was a three-point decision.  For a first time, Matt Mauseth’s Gophers got the narrow win, knocking off #1 in D-III in Wisconsin La Crosse-Aquinas.  Chatfield sent six ranked wrestlers to the mat while the BluGolds sent seven.  There were only four matches where a ranked guy was not wrestling and a trio of ranked-ranked matches.  Chatfield started the dual with three straight pins from #1 at 107 Joey Cady (106), Gunner Polikowsky (113), and #3 at 121 Jameson Priebe (120).  Cady notably pinned Aquinas’ #6 at 106 Peter White.    Third-ranked at 127 Logan Pearson (126) then added a 19-3 tech fall to give the Gophers a 23-0 start.  They then got just enough wins.  Ninth-ranked at 145 Hunter Polikowsky (144) got a massive win, topping #2 at 150 Jacob Penzkover by 7-4 decision to make it 26-7 Gophers.  Nolan Happel (157) got a pin to make it 32-13 Gophers.  From 132 thru 190, those were the Gophers’ only two wins.  Four ranked BluGolds posted victories in that span including #5 Tyler Paulson beating #8 at 138 Kaisen Johnson by 4-2 decision at 138 pounds.  With the Gopher lead 32-29 heading to 215, #5 Will Boelter iced the Gophers’ win with a first period fall.  Chatfield took the dual 38-35.  Each team won seven matches.  Chatfield won five pins, a tech fall, and a decision.  Aquinas won four pins, two majors, and a decision.   Matt Mauseth’s group is 1-1 in the TRC, 2-2 overall.

Wrestling: Chatfield Again Wins FCLMC Holiday Tourney

For a fourth straight year, Chatfield wrestling captured the team title at the 56th incarnation of the FCLMC Wolves’ holiday tournament.  The Gophers got eight champions in 13 weights, as they (271) topped nearest foe second place Pine Island (227.5) with LARP (138.5), GMLOS (127), and FCLMC (105) taking third, fourth, and fifth.  Triton, Rochester-John Marshall, Wabasha-Kellogg, and Winona/Winona-Cotter also competed.   Gophers won titles at the first seven weights, then again at 215.  Top-ranked Joey Cady took 107-pounds via two wins (both 19-4 tech falls).  He topped teammate Everett Priebe in the finals.  Priebe won by fall to make the finals.  Gunner Polikowsky notched a pair of wins by fall to take 114-pounds.  Third-ranked Jameson Priebe used an 18-2 tech fall and a fall to win 121-pounds.  Third-ranked Logan Pearson used a fall and an 8-6 decision over LARP’s #10 Christian Zibrowski for his title at 127.  Zibrowski beat Pearson 7-1 at the teams’ dual earlier in the year.  Zibrowski rode a fall and a 15-0 tech fall to make the finals.  Layne Root went 3-0 (fall, 13-1 major decision, fall) for his title at 133, topping GMLOS’ Parker Armagost in the finals.  Armagost got that far via a pair of pins.  Eighth-ranked Kaisen Johson used a 16-1 tech fall and a fall to make the finals at 139, beating LARP’s #7 Owen Lange by 9-6 decision for his title.   Lange used a fall and a 10-4 major decision to make the finals.  Lange beat Johnson by fall at the team’s dual earlier this year.  Hunter Polikowsky capped off the lighter-weight run by Chatfield, taking 145-pounds via a fall and a 6-1 decision.  And thus, Chatfield won titles at 107 thru 145 pounds.   Sixth-ranked Will Boelter also took first for the Gophers, going 4-0 (three pins, medical forfeit) at 215.  Joining E-Priebe in taking second for Chatfield was Cody Ramaker (152 > won fall, won 9-4 decision over GMLOS state participant Cael Smith, lost 7-0 decision in finals).  Reese Schild (114 > won fall, lost fall, won two falls) and Brenden Kobs (172 > won 23-3 tech fall, lost 8-5 decision, won 11-7 decision, won 10-3 decision) each took third.  The only champion from LARP, GMLOS or FCLMC was the Wolves’ top-ranked Kane Larson (189).  He used a pair of 19-4 tech falls, including over LARP’s #6 Zach Plank in the finals.  Plank made the finals with a pair of falls.  Larson was honored as the tournament’s Most Outstanding (male) wrestler.  Quinci Kaase took second for the Wolves at 172 going 2-1 (won 19-4 tech fall, won 8-5 decision, lost 20-5 tech fall).  On top of Zibrowski, Lange and Plank taking second for LARP, third-ranked Chace Drazkowski did so at 285 (won fall, lost fall).  Carter Bronk (145 > won fall, lost 16-0 tech fall, won 17-1 tech fall, won fall) and Trygg Hegland (215 > won fall and medical forfeit, lost two falls) took third for the Screamin’ Eagles.  On top of Armagost, GMLOS got second places from Drake Payne (215 > won three falls, lost fall) and Calum Sween (160 > won three falls, lost fall).  Payne’s only loss was to Gopher Boelter.  Cael Smith (152 > lost 9-4 decision, won 17-2 tech fall, won 5-4 decision) and Wyatt Krull (285 > won fall, lost fall, won two falls) each took third.  For the first time ever, FCLMC’s event included a girls tourney.   Chatfield (289) also took first over nearest foes Crestwood (200), GMLOS (121), and FCLMC (103).  In the top bracket, Melody Ward (100 > won three falls), Maizee Priebe (112 > won three falls), Bryn Goetzinger (118 > won two falls and a 17-2 tech fall), Brynn Horsman (124 > won three falls and a 17-0 tech fall), third-ranked Elle Eickhoff (142 > won three falls), and Eve Goetzinger (148 > won two falls) all took first.  For GMLOS, Paisley Schlee (106 > won fall and 21-6 tech fall), #9 at 112 Brandy Christenson (155 > won two falls, lost fall), and sixth-ranked Kloe Meyer (235 > won fall) took first.  FCLMC and LARP did not have a first-place finisher, only second placers.  Girls brackets had two to five competitors.  Chatfield’s Eickhoff was named the girls Most Outstanding Wrestler.
