Chatfield Tops KoMets in Battle of Top Ranked Teams
Kasson-Mantorville’s commentator called it the “Super Bowl of Section 1 wrestling.” For the second straight year, highly-ranked wrestling programs, Chatfield, #1 in Class A, and Kasson-Mantorville, #1 in Class AA, did battle in an early season dual. The Gophers entered as the defending Class A state champs while the KoMets were last year’s Class AA state runner-up. For the second straight year, Matt Mauseth’s smaller class team flexed its muscles, doing so this season in more dominant fashion than a year ago. The Gophers never trailed. Once taking a double-digit lead, they only once saw their lead dip into single digits. Chatfield won four of the first five matches. Ranked guys Jameson Priebe (#2 at 107), Javier Berg (#4 at 121), and Kaisen Johnson (#4 at 133) joined with Logan Pearson (114) to get Chatfield out to a 19-4 lead after 133-pounds. Priebe (16-0), Berg (19-4), and Johnson (17-1) won tech falls while Pearson won a 20-7 major decision. K-M won three of four matches from 127 thru 145, as ranked KoMets Rex Ayshford (#3 at 121) and Owen Friedrich (#1 at 152) plus Aiden Friedrich (139) notched victories. Ayshford won a 13-2 major (over Layne Root) and O-Friedrich a 17-2 tech fall (over Wyatt Jacobson). A-Friedrich topped Hunter Polikowski by 4-1 decision on the strength of 4-point second period. It left the score 19-12 Chatfield with six weights to go. But Alden Pearson (#7 at 145) then topped former state entrant Broc Vaughan by 5-0 decision. Highly-ranked Gophers Carson Rowland (#1 at 152) and Ayden Miner (#2 at 160) then followed with 19-3 and 18-2 tech falls. Miner’s win made the score 32-12 Chatfield, ensuring a team win. K-M then got back-to-back wins from ranked guys Jacob Duitsman (#3 at 189) and Kasson Wynia (#8 at 215). Duitsman had maybe the dual’s best battle with Ben Carrier (#7 at 172). Carrier broke a 5-5 tie after two periods with an escape and a takedown to lead 9-5, but Duitsman then pulled off a reversal and four back-points to take the match by 11-9 decision. Carrier had Duitsman cradled for a pin attempt in the second period. Wynia won via 15-1 major decision (over Cole Ramaker). Gopher Will Boelter ended the dual with a 7-2 decision over Griffin Grover. It gave Chatfield, who won eight of 13 matches, the comfortable 35-19 win. Notably, K-M’s Jonah Coleman (#5 at 145) did not wrestle. Chatfield secured 11 bonus points (five tech falls, one major). The Komets had just four (one tech fall, two major decisions). The Gophers won last year’s dual in Chatfield much more dramatically when Miles Mulhern pinned Wynia at 285 for the 26-24 win. It was the Gophers’ first dual (1-0).
