Warrior soccer girls return the defense, must replace the offense

August 31, 2021 by Lee Epps

Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston girls soccer brings back 13 letter winners, nine of which have lettered more than once. Seventh-season head coach Chris Jandt saw four seniors and last year’s offense graduate. But the Warriors return extensive experience on defense. Freshman Josie Foster returns in goal, supported by four letter-winning defensive backs: seniors Grace Denstad, Katelynn Seymour and Autumn Meiners plus junior Mikaela Konkel.

Former standout Katie Bechtel controls the ball while defended by Hailey Alfson during the preseason varsity versus alumni game. The Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston varsity girls prevailed, 2-1.

Senior Hailey Alfson and Honorable Mention All-TRC junior Ayshia Gay will move from midfield into forward positions, along with junior Cameryn Kruse, in the search for goals. But the midfield is still well-stocked with five letter winners: seniors Therese Jore and Marley Sherbon along with junior Kennedy Kruse and eighth graders Siri Konkel and Loisah Gay.

Adding depth on defense are sophomores Regan King and Campbell Cognac along with freshman Libby Morey. Also available are junior midfielder Paris Shefelbein and junior forward Anessa Johnson.

The Warriors will depend on a seasoned defense. “Returning our goalie and starting back line helps,” said Jandt. “Freshman Josie Foster (goalkeeper) has been putting in a lot of offseason work.”

Scoring is the challenge after last year’s 1-11 (0-10 TRC) season during which all six goals came in the season-opening win. “We didn’t score much last year,” said Jandt, “but with a few changes with player positions this year, we should have more chances. It’s going to be an interesting year with some form of normalcy after a shortened season last year.”

Minnesota has added a third class for soccer, but the Warriors remain in Class A. There are now eight girls soccer teams in Section 1A, instead of last year’s 17.

The girls open a 15-game slate at home versus Plainview-Elgin-Millville (Sept. 2) before traveling to section champion Winona Cotter (Sept. 7) and then returning home against Dover-Eyota (Sept. 9).
