Volleyball: Gophers Hand “Losses” to “L” Teams

October 9, 2023 by Paul Trende

Chatfield’s Trindy Barkeim powers a shot toward the block of Lewiston-Altura’s Lavin LaJenue in the teams’ non-conference matchup. The #4 in AA Gophers kept their strong season (6-0, 14-2) going by posting a 3-0 sweep of the Cardinals (25-15, 25-20, 25-20), and then sweeping La Crescent/Hokah 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-13).

Chatfield volleyball’s week featured games against teams in the TRC starting with “L.” The Gophers promptly handed both losses. In a non-conference affair, the Gophers swept Lewiston-Altura on the road (25-15, 25-20, 25-20). Harper Goldsmith (5 kills, 17 assists, 7 digs, 5 total blks), Jaelyn LaPlante (12 kills, 5 digs), and Cora Bicknese (22 digs) led the way, helped by Trindy Barkeim (9 kills), Lexi Hinckley (9 digs), and Hannah Tweten (9 assists). Kristi Rindels’ group then played their only TRC match of the week hosting La Crescent/Hokah. Chatfield posted another sweep (25-20, 25-15, 25-23). LaPlante (18 kills, 11 digs), H-Goldsmith (6 kills, 18 assists, 7 digs), Bicknese (16 digs), and Tweten (16 assists, 23-24 serving, 6 aces) led the way. Barkeim (10 kills), Evy Goldsmith (6 kills), and Hinckley (10 digs) helped. LaPlante’s 18 kills was her second-highest of the season behind the crazy 31 kills she had versus Cotter (the most by any “Journal-11” player in a match this season). The #4 in AA Gophers (6-0, 14-2) share the TRC lead with #3 Caledonia (6-0, 16-1) while #7 in A Fillmore Central (6-1, 15-5) is in third place.
