Volleyball: Larks Sweep G-E to Claim West Title, Beat Southland in Five 

Grand Meadow volleyball’s week included claiming the SEC-West outright, getting to 20 wins, beating a rival in five sets, and running its win streak to 13. Hosting Glenville-Emmons, Cathy Paul’s group performed the sweep (25-17, 25-16, 25-15). Doing so was GM’s 20th win of the year and it gave them the out-right SEC-West title. 

Senior setter Hallie Hendrickson went for 3 (kills), 21 (assists), 5 (digs), and 2 (aces) on 18 of 18 serving. Regan Schaalma (13-13 serving) had four aces. Kendall Jack (11 kills), Gracie Foster (7 kills) and Alyvia Olson (6 kills) led the offense. Cheyenne Bakken (7 digs) led the D.” GM then came back from down 2-1 to beat rival Southland in five sets (21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-16, 15-10). Jack (18 kills, 16 digs) had a big double-double to lead the way. Hendrickson (4 kills, 37 assists, 5 digs), Foster (7 kills 8 digs, 21-21 serving, 5 aces), and Bakken (18 digs) were also huge. Schaalma (9 digs), Olson (7 kills, 6 digs), Holly Weiss (5 kills), and Sophia Braun (4 kills) helped. GM (13-0, 21-4) has won 13 straight and wins the West over nearest foes L/P (9-5, 13-9) and the Rebels (8-5, 9-6). 

Volleyball: #6 Cougars Win SEC-East, Top Lions in Rematch 

Mabel-Canton volleyball entered the week having already clinched a share of the SEC-East title. By virtue of downing Schaeffer Academy easily 3-0 (25-3, 25-5, 25-8), Lonnie Morken’s 6th-ranked Cougars claimed the outright title, their 28th in a row. Senior Tylar Wenthold had a season-high 12 kills. Gwen Rein (27 assists, 6 digs), Kinley Soiney (10 kills), Braylee Stortz (9 kills, 5 digs), and Kaci Wangsness (5 assists, 20-21 serving, 7 aces) also did big work. Ella Halverson added 4 kills. M-C then took on East second place Spring Grove. The Cougars eked out the teams’ previous battle in five sets (25-22, 25-17, 19-25, 19-25, 15-11). The rematch, in Spring Grove, saw the Cougars again jump out 2-sets-to-0 but then win in four (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19). Soiney ripped a season-high 29 kills on .457 hitting to lead the way. She went over 400 kills for the season. Halverson added 15 kills and 5 total blocks, both season highs. Rein had 51 assists, a season-high, and 11 digs. Stortz (9 kills, 10 digs), Lauren Burke (11 digs), and Wenthold (4 kills) also contributed. Seventh grader Livia Garness (6 digs, 19-19 serving) and sophomore Wangsness (21-21 serving) combined to serve 40 of 40, Garness posting 3 aces. For SG, setter Claire Sherburne (39 assists, 7 digs, 20-20 serving) tied a season-high for helpers. Brinley Middendorf (13 kills) and Hailey Normann (10 kills) led the offense, Izabel Kaufmann (23 digs) the defense. Jada Strinmoen (7 kills, 11 digs), Madison Lile (7 kills, 5 digs), Kylie Hammel (5 kills, 6 total blocks), and Carlie Halverson (9 digs) helped. Lion senior Normann, their leader in kills, did not play in the teams’ first meeting. M-C hit 31% (60 kills, 22 errors) while SG hit 14% (44 kills, 24 errors). M-C (13-0, 26-3) wins the East ahead of nearest foes the Lions (9-4, 15-11) and Lanesboro (7-6, 14-14). 

Volleyball: #3 Gophers Surpass 20 wins, Barkiem 1,000 Kills 

Chatfield volleyball accomplished a team milestone and individual milestone in amassing wins over La Crescent/Hokah and Byron on the week. Versus the Lancers, senior hitter Trindy Barkeim put down 13 kills with 5 digs, and she eclipsed 1,000 spikes for her career. The jumpy 5’8” senior, a four-year starter, is closing in on 300 kills for the season, which would be her second straight year achieving said feat. The Gophers won in a sweep, 25-18, 25-19, 25-15. It was Chatfield’s 20th win. They have won 20-plus four years in a row. Cora Bicknese (18 kills, 11 digs) had big double-double to lead the way. Harper Goldsmith (5 kills, 33 assists, 9 digs, 3 aces) and Hannah Tweten (10 digs) were also big. Kristi Rindels’ Gophers, ranked #4 in AA, then swept Class AAA Byron, 25-18, 25-18, 25-16. Goldsmith (28 assists, 7 digs), Bicknese (12 kills, 7 digs), Barkeim (12 kills), and Tweten (18 digs) did the big work. Amaya Harmening (4 kills), Grace Schroeder (4 kills) and Grace Patten (5 digs, 18-18 serving) helped. Chatfield’s regular season has concluded. They finish at 8-2 in the TRC, 21-7 overall.

Three Rivers Conference Volleyball (10/7)

Lakeville North Tourney (Caledonia went 1-2 in pool play, beating Eden Prairie 2-1 (18-25, 26-24, 15-13). losing to Northfield 0-2 (25-27, 23-25) and #2 in AAAA Lakeville-South 0-2 (23-25, 12-25). The #4 Warriors then beat Rochester-Mayo 2-1 (25-7, 17-25, 15-9) and Moorhead 2-0 (25-19, 25-16). Cal tourney leaders: A. Augedahl (118 assists, 26 digs), A. Klug (63 digs), E. Blum (40 kills, 27 digs), A. Reinhart (31 kills, 29 digs, 9 aces), P. Lange (22 kills, 28 digs), and K. King (17 kills, 9 ½ blocks).) 

Goodhue Tourney (Spring Grove went 2-2, beating LeRoy-Ostrander 2-0 (25-18, 25-14) and Rushford-Peterson 2-1 (25-22, 22-25, 15-11) while losing to Cleveland 0-2 (25-27, 21-25) and 0-2 (19-25, 19-25). The Lions took second. SG tourney leaders: C. Sherburne (6 kills, 89 assists, 27 digs, 7 aces), I. Kaufmann (58 digs), H. Normann (29 kills), J. Strinmoen (12 kills, 31 digs), B. Middendorf (24 kills), M. Lile (13 kills, 17 digs), C. Halverson (18 digs). The Lions are 9-4 in the SEC, 15-11 overall. R-P went 3-1-1, beating La Crescent/Hokah 2-0 (25-19, 25-14) and Goodhue 1-1 (23-25, 25-12), while losing to SG (22-25, 25-22, 11-25), then again beating LC/H 2-0 (25-10, 25-19) and Goodhue 2-0 (25-18, 25-14). They took third place. Trojan tourney leaders: T. Schneider (22 kills, 61 digs), K. Magin (60 assists, 23 digs, 11 aces), A. Drinkall (53 digs), A. Helgemoe (34 kills, 13 total blocks), B. Schneider (16 kills, 18 digs), G. Ekern (26 assists, 21 digs). L-O went 0-3, losing to Cleveland 0-2 (24-26, 13-25), Goodhue 0-2 (12-25, 19-25), and SG 0-2. L-O tourney leaders: M.
