Volleyball: #4 Gophers End Trojans TRC Streak, Take Third at Burnsville
In a matchup of top four TRC teams, #4 in AA Chatfield (5-2, 13-6) gave Rushford-Peterson (5-1, 10-2) its second league loss while ending their five-match league win streak. It was a Gopher sweep, 25-14, 25-20, 25-19. Kristi Rindels’ group was easily the first to 20 in each set, 20-12, 20-16, and 20-14. The Chatfield offense, with 47 kills, was too powerful for the Trojans, who had 20 kills. Trindy Barkeim, a senior, had 19 kills on .382 hitting plus 8 digs to lead the way. She had eight kills in game one and seven more in game two. Harper Goldsmith (6 kills, 32 assists, 16 digs), Cora Bicknese (13 kills, 10 digs), and Hannah Tweten (18 digs) were also big. Grace Schroeder added a season-high 6 kills. Torryn Schneider (7 kills, 8 digs), Addison Drinkall (12 digs), Kayle Magin (12 assists, 6 digs), Ava Helgemoe (5 kills, 4 total blocks) and Brielle Schneider (7 digs) did work for R-P. The Trojans (5-1, 10-2) and Chatfield (5-2, 13-6) entered as two of the top four teams in the TRC with Caledonia (7-0, 16-3) and FC (5-1, 14-5). The Gophers then turned around and handled St. Charles 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-14). Bicknese (17 kills, 9 digs) and Goldsmith (34 assists, 9 digs) led the effort with big help from Barkeim (9 kills, 12 digs) and Tweten (17 digs). Schroeder (5 kills) and Grace Patten (16-17 serving, 3 aces) assisted. The Gophers ended the week going 4-1 at the 32-team Burnsville Tourney. Chatfield beat AAAA-schools Woodbury 2-0 (25-16, 25-14) and Minneapolis-Washburn 2-0 (25-23, 25-10) to win their four-team pool. In the eight team Gold Bracket, the Gophers beat #6 in AAA Holy Angels 2-0 (25-22, 25-23) to make the semifinals before falling tightly to #7 in AAA Cretin Durham-Hall 1-2 (25-16, 23-25, 16-18). Chatfield rallied by beating Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 2-1 (25-19, 20-25, 15-6) to take third place. Gopher tourney leaders were Goldsmith (13 kills, 105 assists, 31 digs), Bicknese (49 kills, 60 digs), Barkeim (42 kills, 29 digs, 53-53 serving, 9 aces), and Tweten (72 digs). The top four teams in the TRC are #6 in AA Caledonia (8-0, 17-3), #3 in A Fillmore Central (7-1, 16-5), the #4 in AA Gophers (7-2, 19-7), and R-P (6-2, 11-3).
Volleyball: Larks Run Win Streak to 11, Clinch Share of West Title
Grand Meadow volleyball is streaking through their SEC competition. The Larks posted two more league wins. They have won all 10 SEC affairs and their overall win streak is at 11. At LeRoy-Ostrander was a tussle of massive runs. The Cardinals led game one 16-9 only for GM to go on a 9-2 run to tie the match at 18. Lark Holly Weiss had a key three ace service session that tied the set. All told, the Superlarks ended the set 16 to 5 to post a 25-21 win. Game two saw both teams spurt massively. The Larks started the game 12-1. Hallie Hendrickson served six points, then Cheyenne Bakken six more. The Cards resolvedly ripped off a 15-4 streak to tie the match 16-16! Keira Lewison served the last five points to get L-O back to even. The game was then tied at every number up to 23. GM scored the final two points via Kendall Jack/Gracie Foster combo-block and Jack kill for the 25-23 win. L-O then jumped out 6-2 and 14-9 in game three. GM then spurted 6-1 to tie the match at 15-15. Overall, their run was 11-1, as they built a 20-15 lead. Jack had a three ace, seven-point service session to cap the spree. But L-O battled to the end, eventually tying the game at 23. GM scored the last two points including Foster putting down an emphatic match ending spike. The Larks won their 10th SEC match (10-0) by 3-0 final (25-21, 25-23, 25-23). Jack (8 kills, 16 digs, 3 aces) and Hendrickson (35 assists, 5 digs) led the victors. Foster (11 kills), Bakken (16 digs, 16-16 serving, 3 aces), Alyvia Olson (9 kills), Weiss (3 kills, 10-10 serving 4 aces) and Sophia Braun (4 kills) helped. Maria Almaraz-Nolt (12 kills, 9 digs), K-Lewison (9 kills, 9 digs), and setter Meah Stevens (29 assists, 10 digs) led L-O. Tessa Lewison (12 digs), Addie Harn (11 digs), Miranda Nagel (5 kills), and Madi Stern (5 kills, 6 digs) helped. GM notably out-aced L-O 10 to 3. GM also won the first meeting by sweep (25-17, 25-18, 25-15). The Larks then took care of Schaeffer 3-0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-14). Foster (9 kills) and Jack (9 kills, 4 total blocks) did the best offensive work. Olson (5 kill) and Weiss (4 kills) helped. Hendrickson (4 kills, 24 assists, 5 digs, 23-23 serving, 4 aces) set the table. Bakken (14 digs) and Regan Schaalma (11 digs) led the defense. GM (11-0, 19-4) has clinched a share of the SEC-West title over nearest foe Southland (8-3, 8-4).
Volleyball: #6 Cougars Post Easy Sweeps to Clinch Share of East Title
They are up to 28-straight. Via a pair of ho-hum SEC wins, Mabel-Canton volleyball clinched a share of another SEC-East title. The #6 in A Cougars took down Houston 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-12) and Glenville-Emmons 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-6). Versus the Hurricanes, Kinley Soiney (15 kills, 5 digs, 3 aces) and Gwen Rein (32 assists, 5 aces) were big. Lauren Burke (4 digs, 12-12 serving, 5 aces), Ella Halverson (9 kills), Braylee Stortz (6 kills), and Tylar Wenthold (5 kills) helped. Houston was led by Olivia Yohe (8 assists, 7 digs), Jorja Meyer (5 kills), Emmie Melbo (4 kills), and Lydia Pedretti (4 kills). Versus G-E, Rein (28 assists), Soiney (10 kills, 5 total blocks), and Stortz (8 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces) did big work. Halverson added 8 kills, Wenthold 5 kills. Burke (5 digs, 10-10 serving, 3 aces), Livia Garness (6 digs, 14-14 serving, 3 aces) and Kaci Wangsness (4 digs, 20-20-serving, 4 aces) combined to go 44 of 44 with 10 aces, as the Cougars served 97% with 16 aces. MC (11-0, 24-3) has clinched at least a share of the SEC-East title over nearest foe SG (8-3, 12-8), their 28th consecutive league championship.
