The Spring Grove girls led most of the game, but eventually fell at Lanesboro, 36-31, on Jan. 19. This five-point decision was far different than the Burros’ earlier 27-point (62-35) blowout triumph at Spring Grove. The Lions (6-8, 4-6 SEC) employed a combination zone and man defense that limited the division-leading Lanesboro girls (10-3, 6-2 SEC) to 26 fewer points than they tallied in that November runaway.

Both teams had eight 2-point baskets and three 3-pointers. Despite missing most of their free throws (11 for 25, 44%), the Burros won at the foul line, hitting as many charity shots as Spring Grove attempted (6 for 11, 55%). Neither team shot well from the field (SG 23%, LHS 24%).
Eight Lions scored, but none in double figures. Kylie Hammel led with 9 points, including two of the team’s three 3-balls. Siri Konkel had twice as many assists (4) as turnovers as did Lydia Solum (2 assists). Skyler Check stepped up for the Burros with 13 points with Jessie Schreiber adding 11. Kaci Ruen pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
It was a tight fit with the teams never separated by more than six points. It was well into the second half when the Burros finally seized the lead, 21-20, with a steal and fast break basket by Jensyn Storhoff. The Lions pulled even at 26-all with an Emerson Ingvalson bucket, assisted by Kendal VanMinsel. But Lanesboro would score the next five points from the perimeter and was not caught again.
The Burros have won five of the last six games against Spring Grove, but the Lions still dominate the series, 49 to 23. Lanesboro also won the B-team game, 31-29, and the seventh grade game.
