It was their hardest clinch in a while. Mabel-Canton volleyball (#9 in Class A, 10-0, 20-3) was taken to the limit by rival Spring Grove (9-1, 19-4) in the most key SEC match of the year. It was the teams’ fourth meeting. M-C won twice at their Labor Day Tourney (25-7, 25-14 and 25-18, 25-12). SG was without key asset Mariah Edgington. The first regular season meeting in … [Read more...]
Falcons Post TRC Win #10
They’ve probably been eyeing each other for a while now. They played a key late season TRC match last year. It is close to sure Fillmore Central and Caledonia will play the biggest TRC match of 2017, the league volleyball title on the line. FC fought past two more obstacles to stay TRC perfect. Against a solid St. Charles (5-2, 8-5) team, the Saints took game one, but FC … [Read more...]
Buchholtz Hits For 31
It’s been at least a couple years since Fillmore County has seen a hitter like Kingsland’s Lauren Buchholtz, an athlete who could routinely put up 20 kills. The 5’8” junior went a little above and beyond routine versus R-P. The Knight offense, led by Buchholtz, but also including senior Kori Kruegel, was too much for a game Trojans defensive effort. Kingsland took game one … [Read more...]

Falcons Clip Knights, Near TRC Showdown
It has been a couple years since Fillmore Central volleyball was the Three Rivers heavyweight. In 2013 and 2014, the Falcons won back-to-back undefeated league titles on the way to back-to-back section title games. After a two year lull of still-good-but-not-the-best, FC is tiptoeing toward (hoping for) the later. Travis Malley’s Falcons won two more league matches to move … [Read more...]

FC VB Still Best Falcons, 6-0 in TRC
There was a bit of intrigue to the big FC/W-K volleyball match. Days earlier, Fillmore Central (10-4) was the #1 seed in W-K’s tourney, but fell in the first round. Falcons-North (9-1), surprisingly won the event. Falcons-South (let’s call them the B&B squad) extracted a bit of revenge and posted another very good TRC win. FC fought off W-K for the 3-1 win (25-23, … [Read more...]
Cougar Volleyball Starts 18-0
Mabel-Canton had three non-tourney matches on the week, two versus county foes. The Cougars and Chatfield met for the first time in the Fillmore County Journal Sports era. M-C leading hitter Savannah Slafter just played libero (shoulder). The Cougars started slow but prevailed in a 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-12, 25-15). Payton Danielson (8 kills, 22-22 serving, 5 aces, 9 digs), … [Read more...]
Houston VB Finds a Win Streak
Houston volleyball started the year 1-9. Picking up two more wins, over Fillmore County teams, they ran their streak to three. Ariel Scanlan (20 assists, 20-20 serving), Amber Chapel (10 kills, 3 blocks), and Becca Lee (5 kills) led the way. Scanlan’s older twin sisters Bailey and … [Read more...]
Trojans/Gopher VB Cap Week
Capping the volleyball action was the best match of the week. Chatfield went to R-P and had the Trojans on the ropes. Maybe spurred by their energetic student section, team green found a “W.” The Gophers led most of the first two sets, but had to battle at the end of each to win. Game one saw six late ties. Chatfield ended the stanza 6-0 for the 25-20 win. The Gophers led … [Read more...]

An Interesting “Vets” Tourney
Wabasha always hosts a late September volleyball tournament. Fillmore Central, Kingsland, and Rushford-Peterson were among this year’s entrants. The tourney glared the unpredictability of the area volleyball scene. FC got an easier pool and went 3-0, beating La Crescent (25-18, 25-10), Lake City (25-9, 25-17), and R-P (25-15, 25-23). R-P went 2-1 in that pool, beating Lake … [Read more...]
