It was odd. It was the first high school volleyball match of the year, on October 8. Fans weren’t supposed to be able to attend, then that got annulled the afternoon of the game. So in Grand Meadow, in front of those faithful who were related to the players and thus had the privilege to witness, strong SEC squads, the Larks and Lanesboro, went head-to-head. What wasn’t … [Read more...]

Knight Runner Stands Out at LFC’s Meet
A year ago at the Section 1A Meet, Kingsland freshman Garrison Hubka was his team’s top runner. He finished 78th in a time of 19:19.1. In his first 5,000-meter run of the year, that time flew by the wayside. The sophomore won his second race in as many tries (17:40), finishing nearly a minute ahead of his nearest competitor. It was a notably quick run for Hubka. Just a … [Read more...]
Athlete of the Decade
A Decade’s Worth of Sports Part II
Football had the unique aspect that five of the seven Journal-covered schools all were coached the entire decade by the same guys. In volleyball, only Lonnie Morken accomplished the feat as a pure head coach. The volleyball All-Decade team is 20 deep. Those listed had to be covered by the Journal Sports. Those whose careers spanned just into 2010 are less regarded. … [Read more...]

Lanesboro and Chatfield each improved a bunch. Nine total players from the Cougars, Burros, Kingsland, and Houston were named All-SEC. Seven players from the Falcons, Gophers, and … [Read more...]
Cougars Fall Points Away From State
Last year stung. Venerable Mabel-Canton volleyball had a legitimate chance at making their first state appearance in over a decade. Medford snatched away the dream, beating the Cougars in the Section title match 3-1 (24-26, 21-25, 25-18, 21-25). The Tigers, who finished as State Runner-Up, were better that day. This season, Lonnie Morken’s girls again pushed for that … [Read more...]
