August 31, 2021 by Lee Epps

Caledonia/Spring Grove/Houston girls soccer brings back 13 letter winners, nine of which have lettered more than once. Seventh-season head coach Chris Jandt saw four seniors and last year’s offense graduate. But the Warriors return extensive experience on defense. Freshman Josie Foster returns in goal, supported by four letter-winning defensive backs: seniors Grace Denstad, … [Read more...]

More size than seniority for Spring Grove gridders

August 31, 2021 by Lee Epps

There is considerable experience, but also more youth than maturity. There are more linemen with more size and more strength than the coaches can recall. Skill position players possess height and speed. There is more depth and therefore more competition for playing time than usual, especially among linemen. Twelve of 17 letter winners return, which includes eight of last year’s … [Read more...]

August 24, 2021 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove volleyball is coming off an 8-4 pandemic-shortened season, a third-place tie in the SEC East Division (5-4) and a summer tournament championship that included two wins over state-ranked teams. It is an experienced squad with the tallest Lion lineup that coach Kelsey Morken can recall in her 16 seasons as either a Lion player or area coach. Seven of 10 letter … [Read more...]

Legion Lions close summer season, edge Cougars 2-1

July 27, 2021 by Lee Epps

It was a night for pitchers as Spring Grove closed the American Legion (age 19 & under) season with a tight 2-1 win over visiting Mabel-Canton on July 22. The Lions managed only four hits, but a trio of Spring Grove pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter. Each team used three pitchers, surely by design, since all but one logged more strikeouts than walks. There was only one … [Read more...]

Lion Legion’s last-inning, five-run rally overtakes St. Charles

July 14, 2021 by Lee Epps

Trailing by four runs and only one out away from what seemed like certain defeat, the Spring Grove Legion lads (ages 19 & under) staged a most-improbable five -run rally to overtake visiting St. Charles, 6-5, on July 8. It was a solemn bunch of Saints who watched in stunned silence as the delirious Lion squad streamed into right field in pursuit of sprinting Logan Brumm, … [Read more...]

Legion baseball Lions fall to Dover-Eyota, Chatfield

June 29, 2021 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove American Legion team (ages 19 & under) did not give up any big innings and few big extra-base hits against bigger school district squads, but the Lions only once got out of an inning without giving up a run. The first team to 10 runs won both games at Blayne Onsgard Memorial Field as Dover-Eyota won 10-1 and undefeated Chatfield triumphed 10-4 on June 21 … [Read more...]
