Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

Chatfield football started the year with two wins, freshman tailback Sam Backer making a big early splash.  The Gophers then dropped back-to-back contests to Triton (16-14) and Caledonia (41-8).  In week five, Jeff Johnson’s group got back on track behind their big o-line and young running back.   The frosh did non-frosh things, rushing 24 times for 273 yards and 4 TDs … [Read more...]

Trojans Drop 60 in a Half

September 30, 2019 by Paul Trende

It was a mismatch from the beginning.  Cotter football is in a serious gulley.  R-P football is a strong program that has yielded good teams for decades nearly uninterrupted.  The score was going to be lopsided.  But the Trojans put 60 on the Ramblers, in the game’s first two quarters.  In a contest that had a one hour, forty-minute first half, and about a 40-minute second … [Read more...]

Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

In week three, Houston football rode senior running back Wyatt Walters to a 44-14 win over Lanesboro.  In week four, it was Ben Walters who got all the glory.  The 5’10” 200-pound senior scored all of the Hurricanes’ touchdowns in a lopsided win at Lyle/Pacelli.  Cody Hungerholt’s group took a 16-0 lead into intermission, but scored 24 more unanswered points in the third … [Read more...]

Conversion Lifts R-P to 8-7 Win

September 23, 2019 by Paul Trende

Fillmore County Journal - High School Football

What’s that old saying?  It all comes down to this.  For Rushford-Peterson football, it literally all came down to a couple plays late (on their last possession) in the game versus Goodhue.  Both resulted in scores, giving Davin Thompson’s group a good early season win.  In a battle between two rivals who seemingly always play each other very tight, it was defensive … [Read more...]

Fillmore County Journal - COVID-19 issues dominate Chatfield School Board meetingChatfield Gophers

He’s young.  From a boys high school sports perspective, he’s oh, so young.  At an age where most athletes are hoping to start and excel on JV, he skipped a level.   He’s excelling on the varsity level (without even playing much JV).  He’s played two “big boy” games, amassing two one-hundred-yard efforts, five total TDs, and a pair of interceptions.  And he looks the part, from … [Read more...]
