The Spring Grove girls won two of three games last week, all of which at home and all decided before halftime. Fillmore Central lashed the Lions, 78-36, on Feb. 8 before the Grove girls claimed a 68-38 thrashing of Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons on Feb. 10, one night before completing a season sweep of LeRoy-Ostrander, 60-42. The latter was a conference contest after Spring … [Read more...]

The Spring Grove boys, for a second time this season, used a second-half scoring spurt to subdue Southland. Then they netted a season-most 15 threes on the road while extending their winning streak against LeRoy-Ostrander to 34 games. The 51-38 home win over the Rebels on Feb. 7 was a non-conference decision; the Lions had taken the SEC game in Adams (59-37) back in December. … [Read more...]

A Decade’s Worth of Sports Part III
The boys basketball All-Decade top 20. Those listed had to be covered by the Journal Sports. Careers that spanned just into 2010 are less regarded. Athletes from Houston are only those 2013-on. Rankings are based off honors, team winning, stats, career longevity, coaches ranking, player comparison, and college credentials. Said rankings are very much subject to debate! Special … [Read more...]

1st Team Mikkel Schutte (6’4” Sr. F/C Houston): The Hurricanes rangy stat-stuffing double-double machine, Schutte had a stellar senior year, putting up the extremely rare stat line of 20.5 PPG, 12.1 RPG, 5.3 APG, 2.5 SPG, and 3.7 BPG. Led his team in all five categories. In SEC-league games, finished top three in all five (1st rebounding/blocks, 3rd … [Read more...]
Falcons Fall in State Quarterfinals
It will be a long remembered season. Fillmore Central’s girls’basketball took on its first ever state tourney. But the ending will be more memorable for reasons not sporting. FC’s girls trekked to Minneapolis to play basketball. The Falcons (22-8) drew tournament 3-seed, #4 in state Henning (28-2). Before the teams even took the court, it was announced all consolation and … [Read more...]

Fillmore Central (21-8) came in unranked and seeded second. They nipped GM 43-41 in the semis. The Blossoms and Falcons were the last two teams left standing in a very open 1A field (given Goodhue’s departure to Class AA). The … [Read more...]
Young Trojans Fall in Quarters
Only one Journal-covered boys basketball team made it out of the Round of 16 of their respective section tournaments. It wasn’t a shock it was R-P, but the section four cast will not include the Trojans. Maybe in a couple years, when this young Trojan group matures, their game versus Hayfield will be just a blip. Hopefully, this season will just be a blip, as it’s been … [Read more...]

Gophers Score 11-6 Upset
Throughout the course of the season, Houston, FC, and Kingsland had good campaigns in girls basketball. Yet, Brian Baum’s young Chatfield Gophers were near equivalently capable. The Gophers beat Kingsland but lost to FC. A Class AA team (with just one senior) playing tougher like-class opponents, Chatfield’s season wasn’t as impressive record-wise as the other three. But … [Read more...]
Hurricanes Level Lions a Third Time
It can be a trap. Two teams play in the playoffs for a third time, on the wings of the favorite having already won twice. But for a third time this year, Houston (3-seed, 20-6) was able to suffocate Spring Grove (14-seed, 6-20). SG hung in there for a half of a 1A Round of 16 game, trailing 21-15 at intermission. But the ‘Canes posted a 50-30 win. Junior guard Emma Geiwitz … [Read more...]

Ellie Buchholtz (game-high 21 pts, 5-6 FTs, 11 rebs) led the way. Sam … [Read more...]
Cougars Fall on Buzzer-Beater, Danielson Sets Scoring Record
The most dramatic game of the 1A Round of 16 was the battle of M-C (8-seed, 10-15) and Randolph (9-seed, 12-14). The Cougars hit four mid-first-half threes to lead 22-12. That edge was dwindled to 27-21 by halftime. Out of intermission, the Rockets went on a 14-0 run to lead 35-27. M-C struggled offensively (0-6 FGs, 7 TOs). The Cougars fought back into it late.
