Freshman point guard Siri Konkel passed out 8 assists, and sophomore Kendal VanMinsel collected a career-high 15 rebounds as the Spring Grove girls broke into the win column with a 60-45 win over visiting Schaeffer Academy on Dec. 8. Three Spring Grove girls scored in double figures, led by sophomore guard Emerson Ingvalson with 14 points, senior Addyson McHugh with 12 and freshman Kylie Hammel with 11. Schaeffer all-conference senior Kate Friese led all scorers with 18 points.

Until the final few minutes, the outcome was in doubt – closer than the final score might indicate. Despite four lead changes, the Grove girls (1-2, 1-2 SEC) trailed for most of the first half by slim margins, including a 28-24 halftime deficit. However, a 13-point run early in the second half put Spring Grove ahead for good. But Schaeffer (1-3, 0-1 SEC) remained in contention. It was just an eight-point spread (51-43) with five minutes to play before Spring Grove finally put the game away by scoring nine of the final 11 points.
After hitting only 11 of 35 shots (31%) in the first half, Spring Grove netted 17 of 30 (57%) after halftime. Despite Schaeffer blocking about one of every six SG shots, the small-town Lions still outshot the big-city Lions, 43% to 29%. However, Spring Grove shot a season-low 36% at the foul line (4 for 11)
The pace changed in the second half when Grove began defending full court. Spring Grove was able to function better at the faster tempo than were the visitors, who committed 28 turnovers.
Schaeffer hit only 1 of 12 from 3-point land, but for the second straight game, Spring Grove did not hit a 3-point shot. But then again, there were only seven attempts. Instead, the Grove girls thrived inside with 56 points in the lane, including 21 dribble-drive points and 19 fast-break points. For the first time in three games, the Grove Lions held their own beneath the glass, outrebounded only 34 to 33.
Spring Grove has now won 24 of the 25 games versus Schaeffer, including the last eight. The B-team girls won easily, 50-23, as did the SG seventh graders, 36-14.
