Spring Grove pummels Hurricanes in volleyball section opener

November 7, 2022 by Lee Epps

Addyson McHugh pounded home a season-high 20 kills as Spring Grove opened postseason play with a 3-0 (25-4, 25-14, 25-15) decision over Houston on Oct. 29 in the Round of 16. Seeded No. 4 section among 20 teams, the Lions enjoyed a 21st straight win and third this season over the No. 13-seeded Hurricanes. State-ranked No. 9 Spring Grove advanced into the quarterfinals with a 27-4 record while Houston closed at 8-16.

it was no contest at the net where the Grove girls scored with 38 kills and 7 blocks, while the visitors had considerably more attack errors (20) than kills (14). SG blockers rejected many attacks, scoring instantly with 7 ace blocks, which added to the Hurricane error total.  Some of those errors Seven Lions were credited with kills, including McHugh with 20, Kenadee Gerard with 6 and setter Kendal VanMinsel with 4 kills to go with 27 set assists. Jordis Neeley scored with 3 kills on only 5 attacks. It was often a pass from Maggie Lile to VanMinsel that preceded the kills.

Both squads served accurately with Houston at 94% and SG at 96% (70 for 73), but the Lions scored with 10 aces (3 errors) while the ‘Canes had as many errors (2) as aces. McHugh (12 for 12) and Lile (13 for 14) each served 3 aces while Gerard (8 for 9) had 2 aces. Lydia Solum (12 for 12) and Sydney Holland (8 for 8) each scored with a serve.

The ultimate outcome was never in doubt, even when the Spring Grove attack sputtered a bit in the final set. After two efficient sets at the net, nine of the Lions’ 13 hitting errors occurred in that third set.
