Tysen Grinde scored with a game-opening 81-yard kickoff return, a 44-yard punt return and a 51-yard pass reception as state-ranked No, 5 Spring Grove celebrated Homecoming with a 50-21 win against LeRoy-Ostrander on Saturday, Oct. 8.
Elijah Solum threw for 3 touchdowns and ran 52 yards for the last Lion TD. Already the league leader in total offense completed14 of 19 passes for 190 yards and rushed for 95 yard on only seven carries. Solum also led Lion tacklers with 10 stops. Caleb Griffin scored twice with 12 and 37-yard receptions and kicked six extra points. Hunter Holland added a 32-yard touchdown sprint.
After Grinde’s opening kick-off shocker, the Lions were about to increase the lead until denied first by an interception in the end zone and then by running out of downs on the L-O 17 yard-line. But SG then caught fire, needing only 10 plays, a punt return and a safety to score 36 points in the second quarter on the way to a 43-0 halftime rout.
Blocking up front were Ty Cleven, Logan Brumm, Brandon Jahnke, Cooper Olson and Ethan Crouch. Meanwhile, defensive linemen Noah Blackburn, Emmet Engeldinger, Cleven, Jahnke and Brumm helped limit LeRoy-Ostrander to only two first downs through eight first-half possessions. The Cardinals did not score until the final minute of the third quarter.
Solum had 10 tackles while linebacking buddy Jacob Olerud and nose guard Blackburn each had nine stops and Ethan Crouch seven. There were six tackles for loss. The Cardinal attack depended on quarterback Camden Hungerholt, who rushed for 153 yards (19 carries) including TD runs of 3 and 62 yards. He completed only 4 of 17 passes with no sacks or interceptions. More than half of his 69 aerial yards came on a 37-yard TD toss to Carter Sweeney.
Spring Grove improved to 6-0 (6-0 sub-district) while L-O (1-5, 1-4 sub-district) dropped a fifth straight decision after a season-opening victory. The Lions thus ended a three-game losing streak in the series the Cardinals still lead 15 to 14.
The Spring Grove B-team (4-1) scored 30 points in the first quarter on the way to a 38-0 halftime lead and eventual 38-14 win against Grand Meadow.
