Spring Grove girls undone by Trojan defense

February 16, 2023 by Lee Epps

Spring Grove Girls Basketball

The Spring Grove girls were doomed by turnovers against an aggressive, pressure defense during a 57-23 home loss to Rushford-Peterson on Feb. 1. Six of the Lions’ 24 lost possessions came while the Trojans (15-9) took control with a 13-to-1 scoring stretch during the first half. The Grove girls (10-13) then rallied with a 9-to-2 run of their own and sliced a 16-point deficit down to 11 (28-17) at halftime.

But Lion ball-handling woes returned as R-P scored the first dozen points after intermission for a commanding 40-17 lead. Spring Grove tallied only 10 points in the second half. The Trojans handled the ball with only 10 turnovers and outshot Spring Grove, 37% to 29%.

The Lions outrebounded the visitors, 29-26, but that was their only statistical advantage. Emerson Ingvalson was the lone Lion in double figures with 10 points along with 7 rebounds. Addyson McHugh had 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals while Kylie Hammel added 6 points and 4 boards. Lydia Solum collected a team-high 8 boards. Siri Konkel had 7 of the Lions’ 8 assists.

Kaylee Ruberg led the Trojans with a game-high 17 points and 5 rebounds. Rushford-Peterson has now won four straight versus Spring Grove and lead the all-time series, 37 wins to 19. The Trojans also won the B-team game 31-12 and seventh grade game 40-4.
