25-10, 25-6, 25-8

The visitors put up little resistance while a large Spring Grove crowd witnessed the 2022 home-opening pounding of Lyle/Pacelli on Aug. 30. Eight different Lion servers contributed to 20 service aces, their most instant winners in two seasons.

Kenadee Gerard had match-highs with 11 kills and 5 ace serves. Lydia Solum scored with 4 kills, 4 aces and a block. Peyton Thompson had 2 kills, 3 aces and a block. Maggie Lile supplied 13 set assists and Kendal VanMinsel 12.

The Athletics’ 5 kills were the fewest for a Lion opponent in four years. Their other points came from an ace serve, a block and 17 Spring Grove miscues. Meanwhile, nine different Lions were credited with kills. Spring Grove put away 33 kills with only 7 errors – a strong 43% efficiency.

It was the season opener for Lyle/Pacelli (0-1, 0-1 SEC) while state-ranked No. 7 Spring Grove improved to 2-0 (2-0 SEC) with a fifth straight win versus the Athletics. The Lion B-team (2-0) also won in straight sets, 2-0 (25-7, 25-7); there was no C-team match.
