The Spring Grove girls outran visiting Wabasha-Kellogg up and down the floor for a 63-43 non-conference home win on Dec. 19. Taylor Elton’s Lions scored nearly half of their points (29 of 63) in transition while allowing the Falcons no fast-break points. Fast-break scoring resulted in Spring Grove shooting 54% from the field, the Lions’ best in 11 years. Both teams shot well from 3-point territory, SG 35% (6 for 17) and W-K 30% (8 for 27), but the Lions held a 43-to-11-point advantage in the lane. The Grove girls improved to 6-1, while Wabasha-Kellogg returned home with a record of 1-7.
Three Lions scored in double figures with Emerson Ingvalson responsible for 18 points and 6 steals, point guard Siri Konkel adding 16 points and 7 assists and Kinley Soiney credited with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Kylie Hammel had an admirable stat line with 8 points, a team-high 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Kendal VanMinsel blocked 5 shots.
For Wabasha-Kellogg, Brielle Adams tallied a game-high 19 points while Ileana Deangel-Edelbachi scored 16, combining for 35 of the 43 Falcon points.
The Falcons won the rebounding battle, 37 to 29, and with 13 more offensive rebounds attempted nine more shots from the field than did the Lions. But the visitors shot a chilly 27% from the field, half as successful as Grove’s 54%.
After four early lead changes, the Lions separated with a 12-point run and led by 22 at halftime (41-19) and by as many as 28 (58-30) after intermission. W-K outscored SG by two points in the second half but never challenged for the lead.
It was the teams’ first meeting since a 64-62 Lion win in the 2003 playoffs. Both current squads are young. Spring Grove has no seniors with a primary playing rotation of two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen. The Wabasha-Kellogg roster lists only a half-dozen players of high school age: two seniors, one junior, three sophomores and no freshmen. The Falcons do not have a B-team this season.
