Spring Grove girls out-run, out-rebounded by Lanesboro – twice

March 1, 2021 by Lee Epps

The fifth-place Spring Grove girls could not come close to third-place Lanesboro in two attempts last week. In a 21-point home loss (66-45), the young Lions were competitive for most of the first half. But it was a Burro blowout from the beginning of the 15-point, road rematch (53-38). In both games, Lanesboro (6-5, 6-4 SEC) ruled the rebounding and flourished with fast breaks. Spring Grove slipped to 2-7 (2-6 SEC).

The Burros also swept both B-team games and all four junior high contests by comfortable margins.

Spring Grove junior guard Jordian Leahy scored a career-high 25 points, but Lanesboro received 23 points each from Kaci Ruen and Jessie Schreiber. Both 6-foot sophomores had double doubles with Ruen rebounding a very impressive 16 times and Schreiber 10 in addition to 11 boards from junior Brielle Ruen.

With neither team shooting well from 3-point land (Spring Grove 12%, Lanesboro 17%), the outcome was decided by fast breaks and rebounds. LHS point guard Malia Tessum added 11 points and 8 rebounds and led Lanesboro to a 17-point, fast-break advantage (25-8). Burro rebounding resulted in a 19-point bulge in second-chance points (21-2).

With a height advantage, Lanesboro crushed the home team beneath the glass, 60 to 29, the most rebounds for a Lion opponent in the 21 seasons for which statistics are available. “Lanesboro was very strong inside, and that showed with how well they rebounded,” said Lion coach Kody Moore.

Fouls and trips to the charity stripe were numerous as well with season-most free throws for both Spring Grove and an opponent. But only Leahy took advantage, netting 9 of 12 free throws, but overall, the Lions hit only 11 of 27 (41%) with the Burros slightly better – 15 for 28 (54%).

The game began with the squads trading points; the score was tied for the seventh time (25-25) with 3:22 on the first half clock, but Lanesboro raced away with a 13-to-2 run going into halftime (38-27). Later, an 11-point run made it 53-33.

“Liked some of the stuff I saw out of our pressure (defense),” said Moore. “Jordian Leahy had a nice game scoring a career-high 25 points. We will have to do a better job on the boards and a better job from the free throw line in order to knock them off in our next matchup.”

Lanesboro also won the B-team game 34-13, the eighth grade game 34-19 and the seventh grade game 29-12.

The eventual 15-point loss began with a 17-0 deficit. The Lions, beset with 10 turnovers in their first 14 possessions, went scoreless for the first six and half minutes. After suffering through that start, Spring Grove was back within 14 at halftime (31-17). The Lions scored quickly in the second half, but that would be as close as they would come – trailing by 21 points before closing with an 8-to-2 run.

Spring Grove outshot the home team 33% to 30%, but the ball-handling problem was never solved. With 10 more turnovers (30 to 20) and nine fewer offensive rebounds (13 to-22), the Lions attempted 20 fewer shots than did the Burros.

Spring Grove’s full-court defense forced only four turnovers from the Burros, who beat the pressure for 13 fast-break points.

Kaci Ruen had 18 points and 9 rebounds while Schreiber finished with 11 points and 7 boards. Brielle Ruen added 8 points and 7 rebounds. Tessum directed the attack with 5 assists.

Leahy again led Lion scoring with 10 points. Emerson Ingvalson had 8 points, 5 boards and 5 steals. McHugh scored 8 and rebounded 6 times. Lydia Solum put in 5 points and collected a career-high 9 rebounds. Katelyn Kraus added 6 points and 4 rebounds.

It was another convincing four-game sweep with the Burros taking the B-team contest 37-23, the eighth grade game 33-12 and the seventh grade matchup 33-10.
