Spring Grove girls fall to top seed in section semi-finals

November 10, 2021 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls, with the No. 4 seed, saw their volleyball season end in the section semi-finals with a 3-0 loss to top seed and state-ranked No. 8 Bethlehem Academy. The Lions, who closed at 20-10, were the only Section 1A semi-finalists that were not state ranked. The Cardinals from Faribault (20-11) went on to win the section championship with a straight-set victory over state-ranked No. 9. Kenyon-Wanamingo, which had eliminated No. 6-ranked Mabel-Canton.

Bethlehem Academy 3, Spring Grove 0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19)

The match was decided by the quick and aggressive Cardinal hitters, who had a few more attacking errors (19) than did Spring Grove (16) but also considerably more kills (39 to 22). The Lions hit with 8% efficiency, not enough to keep up with the Cardinals’ 15%. BA junior middle hitter Lindsay Hanson had 17 kills while her classmate Kate Trump added 10.

Bethlehem Academy also served aggressively (89%) with 10 aces and also 8 misfires. Grove served a good 91%, but lost points with 2 aces and 5 off-target serves.

BA was able to seize some momentum in each set, but there were no momentum swings. While the Lions were not able to score more than three points in a row all night, BA used a six-point run to break a 12-12 tie in set one and went on to win by four, 25-21. Both teams’ hitters and servers broke even in that opening set, the but Lions could not overcome four ball-handling errors in a four-point loss.

Spring Grove led set two, 4-2, before BA swept the next 13 points with two ace serves and an impressive string of 8-kills on 17 swings. The Cardinals then took set three by six points, 25-19, after separating with a 5-point run. Throughout the match, the Grove girls were never able to answer with a scoring run of their own.

Lion libero Maggie Lile had 20 digs and scored with 3 kills (no errors). Lydia Solum was the Lions’ most efficient hitter with 4 kills and only one error with only 9 swings (33%). Julia Halverson served 100% (10 for 10) with an ace while also defending with 15 digs. Rachel Normann had 15 set assists and 12 digs. Kenadee Gerard was the kill leader with 7.

Spring Grove had advanced to the semi-finals with section wins against No. 13 seed Kingsland and No. 5 seed Fillmore Central.
