For the Spring Grove girls, it was the second straight challenge against a larger school, when the Lions fell to Class AA Annandale, 60-34, at the Dec. 27 holiday double headers at Rushford-Peterson. The Cardinals (3-2) opened the second half by scoring on 10 of 11 possessions to extend its seven-point halftime lead into a commanding 22-point advantage (48-26). Annandale is located northwest of the Twin Cities and plays in Section 5AA.

The Lions (2-5), with six early turnovers against a full-court defense put them in a 10-point hole (19-9) from which they never escaped. They clawed back to within three points (22-19) late in the first half. But the Cardinals scored the final four points of the first half before their second half avalanche rendered it a holiday runaway.
The depth of the larger school showed up in the scorebook with nearly half (28 of 60) the points being scored by non-starters. Freshman point guard Siri Konkel led Spring Grove with 9 points, 3 assists and 3 steals – all team-high totals plus 5 rebounds. Addyson McHugh and Kylie Hammel each added 7 points while Kendal VanMinsel collected 8 rebounds.
The Lions shot a season-high 31% (4 for 13) from 3-point land, but Annandale netted nine trays (9 for 31, 29%). Overall, both teams had similar shooting success – SG 33%, AHS 34% – but the Cardinals attempted many more shots (68-42), due to 14 more offensive rebounds and 11 fewer turnovers.
The Spring Grove B-team (2-4) experienced a similar fate, dropping a 57-22 decision to Annandale.
