Spring Grove girls buried by Burros on the backboard, scoreboard

January 3, 2022 by Lee Epps

The Lanesboro girls dominated the game because they dominated the glass with a huge 47-to-18 rebounding bulge over visiting Spring Grove on Dec. 21. Both teams came in with only one league loss. With the 58-35 win, the Burros (6-3, 3-1 SEC) remained atop the SEC East Division standings. While the Lions (3-6, 3-2 SEC) remain numerically alive in the loop race, but they had no answer for Lanesboro’s interior height,

Jordian Leahy is fouled while driving into the lane at Lanesboro. Burro defenders are Skyler Check, Ella Cambern (#14) and Jessie Schreiber (#11). Leahy led Spring Grove scoring with 16 points, but Lanesboro claimed a convincing 58-35 conference victory.

strength and length and solid play on the perimeter.  Kaci Ruen, a 6-foot junior center, posted an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double while 6-0 Jessie Schreiber had 7 points and 12 boards. On the perimeter, senior Malia Tessum had 13 points and 7 rebounds while returning All-SEC senior Brielle Ruen contributed 6 points and 8 rebounds. It was all orchestrated by eighth grade point guard Jensyn Storhoff, who added 10 points.

For Spring Grove, Jordian Leahy (16 points) and Addyson McHugh (12 points) combined to tally 28 of the team’s 35 points. The Lions shot better from 3-point range (38%, 6 for 15) than they did closer in (25%). But with six more turnovers and 29 fewer rebounds, the Grove girls did not get to shoot often enough. The Lions were down by 20 points at halftime (31-11), greatly due to attempting only 17 shots while burdened with 16 turnovers. But to their credit, they came back in the second half with better ball-handling (8 turnovers) and were outscored only 27-24.

Lanesboro was tagged with only eight fouls, limiting the Lions to a season-low six free throws (3 for 6). The Burros were woefully ineffective at the foul line (6 for 18, 33%) and shot a weak 19% from 3-point land (4 for 21), but they did not really need free throws or treys while using 27 offensive rebounds to outscore SG in second-chance points, 20-1. LHS had far more offensive rebounds (27) than the Lions had total rebounds (18) and also more defensive boards (20) than the Lions had total rebounds.

It was the Burros’ third straight win in the series, which Spring Grove still leads 48 wins to 21. The Lions won the B-team game, 28-21, and the seventh grade game, 25-15. However, the Lanesboro eighth graders claimed a one -point win, 26-25.
