Spring Grove defense deprives Burro boys

January 3, 2022 by Lee Epps

The first few minutes provided no indication that Spring Grove would coast to a convincing 70-34 victory.  It was a hot-shooting start for the Lanesboro boys who hit three of their first four shots, while the home team was going 1 for 8. The Burros led 7-2. But then, Spring Grove changed defenses and took complete control. Lanesboro managed only two more field goals before halftime of a game that suddenly became a runaway. The Burros led 12-11 before the Lions scored the next 26 points to lead 37-12 at intermission.

Against Spring Grove’s suffocating defense, Lanesboro had more turnovers than shot attempts before halftime and finished the night with 30 lost possessions while attempting only 38 shots – almost half of them from 3-point land. Meanwhile, the Lions had more assists (13) than turnovers (12) and made more free throws (17 for 28) than the Burros attempted (4 for 11)

Lion junior guard Tysen Grinde tossed in a career-high 25 points to go with 8 steals and 7 rebounds. Elijah Solum added 14 points and 4 steals while Carson Gerard contributed 13 points. Jaxon Strinmoen (6 points) shared rebounding honors with 7 along with 3 assists and 3 steals. Eleven Burros scored, but no one had as many as Stephan Schultz’s 6 points.

With a 17th consecutive victory over Lanesboro, Spring Grove (4-1, 3-0 SEC) remained the only SEC East Division team undefeated in conference play. Lanesboro dropped to 2-3 overall, including a 1-3 conference mark.

In the B-team game, Lanesboro finished with 33 points; the Lions (2-1) had that many by halftime and won 49-33 with Isaac Nerstad scoring 13 points and Jacob Olerud 11. Nine Lions scored and 11 rebounded. Junior high results were unavailable.
