Spring Grove boys crush Schaeffer title hopes

January 26, 2023 by Lee Epps

Tysen Grinde poured in a career-high 28 points along with 8 steals as the first-place Spring Grove boys steamrolled past second-place Schaeffer Academy, 69-37. on Jan. 16 at Rochester. Jaxon Strinmoen added 16 points while Elijah Solum scored 13 points and passed around a career-best 7 assists with no turnovers. That trio also led Grove rebounding with 5 boards each. Jacob Olerud (6 points) had a career-high 5 assists, again with no turnovers. Ethan Crouch went out with an ankle injury and did not return.

With only one previous conference loss to state-ranked Lyle/Pacelli, it was Schaeffer’s best shot at SEC East Division supremacy. But Schaeffer (8-6, 6-2SEC) fell back two games in the loss column behind state-ranked, East leader Spring Grove (8-1, 6-0 SEC).

Schaeffer worked hard, but from the outset, those big-city Lions were overwhelmed by the small-town Lion defense, which came away with 22 steals to fuel a 23-3 scoring advantage with fast breaks. Schaeffer had 31 turnovers overall. Schaffer’s all-conference sophomore Ethan VonSchepen was held to only 7 points, all from the free throw line – no baskets.

Schaeffer competed well on the glass, with a slight 39-to-37 edge in rebounding. And the home team took advantage of Spring Grove’s season-most 17 fouls while hitting 12 of 18 free throws. SG went only 3 for 7 at the foul line. The Schaeffer boys shot much better and more often beyond the 3-point arc (37%) than they did closer in (15%). Schaeffer went 7 for 19 from 3-point land, including five treys from junior Levi Owen. But Spring Grove was even better (8 for 21, 38%), including Grinde’s 4-for-7 marksmanship and Olerud sinking 2 of 5 from downtown.

Coach Wade Grinde’s guys stormed off to a 33-4 lead, were up 44-13 at halftime and would lead by as many as 38 points in the second half.

Spring Grove reigned all evening, taking the B-team game,61-25, the eighth grade game, 41-31, and the seventh grade game, 31-15.
