Solum scores 1,000th; Spring Grove guys grill Glenville-Emmons

Junior guard Elijah Solum scored his 1,000th career point, and the state-ranked No. 11 Spring Grove boys vanquished visiting Glenville-Emmons, 72-31, on Senior Night on Ground Hog Day (Feb. 2) – the score similar to the Lions’ 75-27 December decision at Glenville.

Solum led all scorers with 23 points while Tysen Grinde tossed in 13 and Jacob Olerud 12. Eight Lions contributed to 21 assists. Solum distributed 4 assists with no turnovers while Grinde had 6 helpers, Bryce Berns 3 and Jaxon Strinmoen another 3.

Grinde had 7 of the team’s 18 steals that contributed to 30 Glenville-Emmons turnovers. Twelve of the 13 Grove guys rebounded, led by 5 boards by Solum. But the Wolverines matched the Lion team total of 27.

Spring Grove (16-1, 13-0 SEC), shot a good 50% from the field, including a good 38% (8 for 21). from beyond the 3-point arc. The Wolverines (3-14, 2-13 SEC), with one out of every six-and-a-half shots blocked, shot only 26%.

For the third straight game, Spring Grove had half a hundred points by halftime, this time with a 50-9 lead after scoring the last 31 points of the first half. Twenty-three of the 30 Wolverine turnovers came before halftime. The Lions abandoned backcourt defensive pressure while each team added 22 points after intermission. It was the 17th straight win for Grove guys in the series they now lead, 33-4.

The Lion B-team (12-3) won 57-36 to also complete a season sweep. There were no junior high games.
