Seven All-State Players Denote All 9-Man South-East

December 20, 2021 by Paul Trende

Tysen Grinde
Fillmore County Journal - Paul Trende Sports Director
Paul Trende

Area nine-man football teams had a fabulous year. It could be argued that three Journal 11 teams were amongst the top five in the state. The South-East All-District team is littered with stand-outs. In fact, seven area guys even made 9-Man All-State: L-O’s Chase Johnson (QB), Gavin Sweeney (DL), and Tanner Olson (DL), Lanesboro’s J.T. Rein (RB) and Seth Semmen (S), and GM’s Dustin Copley (RB) and Taylor Glynn (LB).

LeRoy-Ostrander tops the list. Trevor Carrier’s guys won the 9-Man state title. Leading the Cards in going 12-2 and accomplishing that feat were All-District picks Chase Johnson (5’5” 170, Sr., QB/DB), Tanner Olson (6’2” 200, Sr., OL/RB/DT), Gavin Sweeney (6’4” 215, Sr., TE/DE), and Memphiz Gomez (6’0” 200, Sr. RB/LB). Johnson was remarkable. The Fillmore County Journal Football Player of the Year threepeats as A-D and South-East Back of the Year. He was an elite dual-threat QB who amassed over 4,000 total yards and 55 total TDs (81-168, 1,554 yards, 23 TDs, 6 INTs passing; 258-2,871 yards, 36 TDs rushing)! Johnson averaged 205 rushing yards per game, 11 yards per carry, and 19 yards per completion! If Minnesota had a 9-Man Player of the Year, Johnson would be it. His last three years have been spectacular (31 games; 3,693 yards, 47 TDs passing; 5,093 yards, 51 TDs rushing). They paralleled L-O’s football surge culminating in the state title. Aiding his cause was Tanner Olson, the sub-district Lineman of the Year. Olson converted to running back late season, a key transition, giving L-O a second big rushing threat (103-768 yards, 19 TDs rushing – all in seven games). His defensive stats were gawdier (137 tackles, 15 sacks, 9 passes defensed – as a D-tackle, five FFs, three FR’s, one INT). He finished with 35 ½ career sacks. Sweeney was L-O’s second imposing D-lineman. He did offensive (16-343, 5 TDs receiving, big blocking TE), defensive (113 tackles, 16 TFLs, eight sacks, four FF’s, four FR’s), and special teams work (38-48 PATs, 2-2 FGs). Both Olson and Sweeney repeat as A-D. Gomez did work at LO’s middle linebacker (117 tackles). He was A-D HM last year. Tristan Lewison (5’10” 150 Jr. WR/DB > 38-916 yards, 13 TDs receiving; five interceptions) and Hayden Sass (6’1” 200 Sr. OL/DL) made A-D HM this year. Lewison led the sub-district in receiving yards and TDs.

Caledonia’s Thane Meiners aggressively wrestles a rebound away from Stewartville’s Bodey Mayer in the teams’ non-conference game. A rematch of last year’s 1AA final saw the #2 Warriors post a 79-61 win to improve to 2-0.

Regular season South-East sub-district champion and 9-Man Section 1 runner-up Lanesboro gets five A-D picks; J.T. Rein (5’11” 195 Sr. RB/LB), Seth Semmen (6’2” 200 Sr. QB/S), Clay Schwichtenberg (5’10” 250 Sr. OL/DL), Jordan Peterson (6’4” 185 Sr. TE/DE), and Hayden Lawstuen (6’1” 180 Jr. RB/DB). Rein was a stud at running back for the Burros, nearing 2,000 yards (188-1,913 yards, 26 TDs rushing). He had nine 100-yard rushing games including the ridiculous effort versus SG (22-363, 7 TDs rushing). The four-year starter repeats as A-D. He ran for over 3,800 yards with 51 rushing TDs in his career, the Burros best back since Niko Anderson. Semmen was an excellent plan B (105-936 yards, 17 TDs rushing; 359 yards, 6 TDs passing). Lanesboro’s three-year starting QB and safety threepeats as A-D. Rein and Semmen combined for nearly 3,000 yards rushing, helping the Burros top 300 yards in 10 of 11 games. Schwichtenberg and Peterson were key assets to Lanesboro’s blocking scheme and defensive line. Schwichtenberg was A-D HM last season. Lawstuen was another run option (69-391 yards, 6 TDs rushing) plus a hard-hitting cornerback. Making A-D HM were Carter Clarke (6’2” 190 Sr. DE/TE) and Jacob Peterson (6’4” 185 Sr. TE/DE). All the above players were key parts of a Burro running game that surpassed 5,000 rushing yards. Burro Coach James Semmen was the sub-district’s Coach of the Year.

Rushford-Peterson’s Carson Thompson battles for the ball in the Trojans’ contest with #1 Hayfield (nearest Vikings are #24 Kobe Foster and #3 Zander Jacobson). R-P beat Hayfield 51-47 in a huge early season win.

Also getting five All-District picks is Grand Meadow. Dustin Copley (6’1” 175 Sr. RB/DB), Taylor Glynn (6’2” 195 Sr. QB/LB), Riley Paul (6’2” 230 Sr. OL/DL), Carter Mueller (6’1” 210 Sr. OL/DL), and Corbin Ludemann (6’3” 165 So. TE/LB) make the cut. Copley threepeated as A-D after being the Larks most used offensive weapon (121-783 yards, 15 TDs rushing; 19-374 yards, 4 TDs receiving). Electric in the open field, he added three return TDs (one punt, two kick-off). Glynn moved to QB and had an excellent year (86-133, 1,381 yards, 13 TDs, 4 INTs passing; 109-654, 10 TDs rushing), posting a sub-district best 120.0 QB-rating (64.7% completion). He led the team in tackles (110) and interceptions (3) as well. Glynn repeated as A-D. Paul was second to Glynn in tackles (86) while leading the team in sacks (7). Mueller also played both lines (59 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 FRs). Ludemann was used multiple ways on offense (46-362, 4 TDs rushing; 20-318 receiving) while adding a team third-best tackle-total (85). Isaac Harmening (5’8” 155 Jr. TE/DE > 80 tackles) and Jace Kraft (6’2” 150 JR. WR/CB > 22-343 yards, 5 TDs receiving) made A-D HM. Said crew led the Larks to an 8-2 season (beat L-O, lost to L-O and Lanesboro).

Spring Grove gets four All-District selections in Tysen Grinde (6’2” 170 Jr. WR/DB), Carson Gerard (6’4” 195 Sr. TE/DE), Elijah Solum (6’1” 190 So. QB/LB), and Jaxon Stinmoen (6’3” 165 So. WR/DB). All are first time selections. Solum was the Lions QB, putting up good numbers despite missing two games to injury (77-147, 1,233 yards, 12 TDs, 8 INTs). He also easily led the team in tackles with 100. Grinde contributed in all phases on offense (30-437, 3 TDs receiving; 37-162 rushing; 22-57, 231 yards, TD, 4 INTs passing; KR-TD). He was SG’s second-leading tackler (56). Grinde was A-D MH last season. Gerard was third on the team in tackles (47) while also catching some passes (19-330, 3 TDs receiving) in his only year of football. Strinmoen had a team-best 6 TFLs while leading the Lions in receiving (20-440, 4 TDs receiving). Hunter Holland (5’9” 166 Jr. RB//LB) and Reid Bjerke (6’2” 175 Sr. WR/DB) made A-D HM. Holland repeated after being the team’s top rusher (79-323 yards, 4 TDs, 5 total TDs). Bjerke was honored despite missing three-plus games. SG as a team played one less game (L/P).

Lanesboro’s Kaci Ruen tries to keep her balance as Cougar defender Hope Erickson looms. Ruen had a couple 20-plus-point games to lead the Burros to wins over M-C (48-22) and United Christian Academy (45-29). Bret Klaehn’s girls (4-2) have won three straight.

Mabel-Canton also gets four A-D picks in Cayden Tollefsrud (5’9” 150 So. RB/DB), Alex Arneson (5’11” 190 Sr. OL/LB), Robert Michels (5’8” 200 Jr. RB/OL/DL), and Tyler Larson (5’10” 150 Fr. WR/DB). Tollefsrud repeats in making A-D after leading M-C’s rushing attack. He topped 1,000 yards amidst the Cougars ground and pound attack (234-1,057 yards, 12 TDs rushing; 14-147, TD receiving). Tollefsrud scored over half his team’s points and was the team’s second leading tackler (69). Arneson was the team’s top tackler (76) including leading the squad with 11 ½ TFLs and 2 ½ sacks. Michels moved from line to fullback (86-357 yards, 6 TDs rushing; 4-105 receiving), giving M-C a middle pounder. Larson also did some ground work (44-245, 2 TDs rushing; 5-54 receiving) while notching a team second-best seven TFLs. James Arneson (5’10” 160 Sr. OL/DL) made A-D HM for M-C.

Kingsland and Houston each get one A-D pick. The elusive Kaden Rath (5’7” 155 Sr. QB/WR/DB) makes it for the Knights. He accrued stats in multiple ways (18-225, 4 TDs receiving; 40-264 yards, TD rushing; 17-37, 183 yards, 4 TDs, 3 INTs passing). Rath also had 48 tackles, three “INTs,” and a punt return TD. James Howard (6’1” 165 Sr. RB/DE > 102-517, 8 TDs rushing; 14-286, 4 TDs receiving; 3 sacks) and Kale Mensink (5’10” 170 Jr. QB/CB > 64-108, 769 yards, 9 TDs, 4 INTs passing; TD rushing; 4 interceptions) made A-D HM for the Knights. Howard was A-D last year. Said guys helped Kingsland to its most competitive year of football (3-6) in a decade. Houston’s lone A-D pick is Tanner Kubitz (6’3” 175 Sr. OL/LB > 21-311, 2 TDs receiving – all stats in the last six games). Aydan Florin (5’7” 140 Sr. WR/DB) and Ethan Hargrove (5’11” 170 Sr. TE/DE > 30-378, 2 TDs receiving) made A-D HM.

Trojans Boys’ Week Headlined by Taking Down #1 Hayfield

Early season rankings are not everything. But Hayfield started at #1 based off winning last year’s state title. They have some key guys back. A match-up of the Vikings at Rushford-Peterson pitted two 2021 1A semifinalists. They game was tight all the way. Free throws proved critical. The score was tied as late as 43-43. From that point on, R-P scored all its points at the free throw line (8 for 8). Justin Ruberg hit four straight to give the Trojans a 47-43 lead. Down 49-47 in the final 20 seconds, Hayfield’s Ethan Pack missed a go-ahead three. Logan Skalet then made two freebies (0:03) to ice the game. The Trojans posted what should be a strong section win, 51-47. Ruberg led the way by scoring a game-high 24 points (8-15 FGs, 8-8 FTs, 4 rebs). Grady Hengel (10 pts) and Malachi Bunke (7 pts, 5 rebs) helped out. Senior guard Andrew Hoiness had just two points. He hit two free throws late to put R-P up 49-45. The Trojans finished 19 of 22 at the line (86%). Hayfield went 6 of 14 (42%). R-P survived getting out-rebounded 23 to 16 and giving up 14 second-chance-points while scoring just two. The Vikings were led by Pack (17 pts, 5-8 threes, 6-11 FGs, 4 rebs, 3 asts) and Easton Fritcher (10 pts, 4 rebs, 5 asts). The win came days after R-P handled FC. The Falcons led the contest 19-15 in first half, only for R-P to end on a 12-3 run and lead 27-22 at intermission. R-P had eight made field goals, all threes. FC tied the game at 29 in the second half, but Bunke then hit back-to-back threes. They spurred a 21-6 Trojan run, a 50-35 lead. Ruberg, the Trojans 6’3” senior F, scored 10 straight in the half. The last bucket put him at 1,000. R-P prevailed 61-44. Ruberg (21 pts, 7-9 FTs, 13 rebs) and Bunke (17 pts, 4-12 threes, 3 rebs, 3 asts, 3 stls) led the Trojans. Hengel and Dawson Bunke added 6 points. Jake Fishbaugher (16 pts) led FC, helped by Jayce Kiehne (9 pts) and Bryce Corson (8 pts, 8 rebs). R-P was 11 of 32 (34.4%) from deep, FC 4 of 18 (22.2%).  R-P improves to 1-0, 2-0.

#2 Warriors Post Two Non-Conference Wins

Caledonia boys basketball’s non-conference schedule is challenging. The powerhouse Warriors take their basketball show a myriad of places. Their first two games had them playing a home interstate contest with Onalaska and then trekking to Stewartville. Versus the Hilltoppers, the Warriors led 31-22 at halftime and prevailed 67-56. Eli King (19 pts), Ja’Shon Simpson (17 pts), Jackson Koepke (13 pts), and Thane Meiners (10 pts) gave the Brad King’s group great balance offensively. Cal moved on to a Saturday marquee dual at Stewie (a re-match of last year’s 1AA final). The Tigers don’t have Will Tschetter (signed with Michigan). Warrior D-I signed Eli King officially burst back on the scene (after missing last year). And he was a big part of the critical series late in the game. With Cal up 59-56, Jackson Koepke authored an offensive rebound put-back basket for a 61-56 lead. King then got a steal and soaring dunk, then immediately another steal, which led to two King made free throws. The spurt gave Caledonia a 65-56 lead. All told, the Warriors ended the game on a 20-5 run over the last 4:30 to post a 79-61 win. Stewartville began the game leading 13-2, but the Warriors physical defensive pressure and relentless offensive driving wore out the Tigers. King finished as high-scorer (30 pts, 10 rebs, 4 asts, 4 stls). Koepke (14 pts, 5 rebs) was the only other Warrior in double figures. Chris Pieper (7 pts, 7 rebs), Meiners (7 pts, 3 asts), and Mason King (6 pts) chipped in some “O.” Stewartville was led by Henry Tschetter (21 pts, 5 rebs, 4 ast) and Tegan Malone (18 pts, 5-11 threes). Caledonia was plus-10 at the free throw line (19 of 24 to 9 of 15). They made their last 10 and had 13 second half makes to Stewie’s two. The Class AA #2-ranked Warriors are 2-0.

Houston’s Priya Kingsley lets loose a floater over Spring Grove’s Kendal Van Minsel (#11) while Jordian Leahy (#23) is also pictured. The Hurricanes posted a 58-32 win over the Lions to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Larks Girls Breeze to 5-0

They are the last Journal 11 girls basketball team yet unbeaten. Ryan Queensland’s Grand Meadow squad posted three double digit wins to notch a 3-0 week. The Larks first crushed Southland 76-26, out-rebounding the Rebels 52 to 18. Kendyl Queensland (19 pts, 8 rebs), River Landers (16 pts, 8-11 FGs, 8 rebs), Lauren Queensland (16 pts, 11 rebs), and McKenna Hendrickson (13 pts, 9 rebs) gave GM four in double figures.  Sydney Cotten added 5 (pts), 6 (rebs), and 5 (asts). A couple nights later, the Larks hosted former SEC-West foe Randolph in a now non-conference battle. GM posted a 59-27 win. Team Lark went 8 of 15 from deep (53%) and 25 of 50 from the field (50%). K-Queensland (16 pts, 7-11 FGs, 5 rebs, 4 asts), Hendrickson (13 pts, 3-5 threes, 8 rebs, 3 asts, 3 stls), L-Queensland (10 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls), and Landers (10 pts, 7 rebs) again gave the Larks four in double figures. GM ended its week taking on Crestwood at the Border Battle in Decorah. GM led 28-24 at halftime, but won the third quarter 10-3 for a 38-27 lead. They prevailed 51-36 shooting 20 of 39 (51%) and winning at the free throw line 10 of 14 to 3 of 8. Landers, a 6’1” senior C, led all scorers (21 pts, 9-12 FGs, 6 rebs). Hendrickson (11 pts, 5 rebs) also hit double figures. Cotten (7 pts) and K-Queensland (6 pts, 7 asts) helped. The wins improved GM’s record to 2-0 in the SEC, 5-0 overall. All five wins have been by double-digits.
