The April 8 Rushford Council meeting presented a thin agenda, but an abundance of notices and report updates.
First up, Rushford’s event series Roots & Rhythm continues to gain momentum. The event is a partnership between the public library, the Rushford Area Historical Society, and the Rushford Area Society for the Arts. A Legacy Community Collaboration grant will fund the cost of various musical groups. Dates and details include the Darr Family Band and dedication of the Susan Hart Memorial Gazebo on June 6, the Rhutabega Brothers on June 13, TravAce on July 18, and local favorite Troubleshooter on July 25.
Another fun upcoming event is Brooklyn Days on May 18. The event will be held from 12-8 p.m. at Brooklyn Park and features a live and silent auction, raffle, kids activities, photo booth, bingo, and a bean bag tournament. Food, as well as a popcorn and lemonade stand, will also be available. Music by Troubleshooter and Darr Family Band will round out the entertainment. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, Gunderson Health System. More information is available on the Facebook page.
The city received notice from engineer Derek Olinger regarding Local Road Improvement Program Project funding. The Elm Street project will not receive state funding despite meeting multiple criteria. According to Olinger, the city was “in the middle of the pack” for applications. He noted his surprise at Rushford’s application not ranking higher, given the projects he knew about, and expressed additional frustration that the state awarded Rushford’s district one project while others received two or three. The city will reevaluate the plans for the road.
The city’s Northend Campground opens the weekend of April 12. Public Works is making all necessary repairs at the North Mill/West Center Street park. The department will contract with pest management to help control bees to ensure a “safe environment” at city parks.
During regular business, the council unanimously approved the recommendation from Public Works Director Roger Knutson to hire Jonah Buchanan as part-time summer help. Buchanan also worked for the department last year, averaging 25 hours/week. City staff budgeted for the position.
Rushford Fire Department received a large donation of $10,080 from the Fire Department Relief Association for air pack equipment. “Successful fund-raising events by the Relief Association over the past years have made this generous donation possible,” read the agenda.
The next regularly scheduled council meeting is Monday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m. at city hall. The public is encouraged to attend.
