Rally falls one point short for Lion girls against Houston, 49-48

February 23, 2023 by Lee Epps

The Spring Grove girls came up one point short after trailing by 18 points in the second half. Down by seven with a minute remaining, the Lions scored three times within 45 seconds before visiting Houston escaped with a 49-48 win as the regular closed on Feb. 16.

Addyson McHugh had a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double in her last appearance on the home court. She was one rebound short of three straight double-doubles after 24 points and 11 rebounds versus LeRoy-Ostrander and 24 points and 9 boards at Mabel-Canton earlier in the same week.

Kylie Hammel added 17 points along with 7 rebounds while Siri Konkel had 7 assists. Senior Lydia Solum did a masterful job defending Houston standout Sydney Torgerson, who managed only 5 points in this rematch after tallying 28 points against Spring Grove back in mid-January. Avery Kingsley led Hurricane scorers with 13 points while Ashtyn Meyer was close to a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Priya Kingsley added 9 points.

The Lions led 15-13 before the ’Canes launched a 14-to-1 run on the way to their 32-21 halftime advantage. Soon after the break, Houston pushed the lead to 18 points (39-21), but the Lions quickly clawed back into contention with a 13-point run of their own. They never caught up, but a later six-point Spring Grove spurt made it 44-40. Houston went back up by seven and went into a delay offense with just under two minutes to play.

With 59 seconds remaining, a steal and fast-break layup by Emerson Ingvalson made it 49-44. With the Lions forced to foul, Houston missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity, and a rebound basket by Kylie Hammel made it 49-46 with 22 seconds to play. A steal by Konkel and transition bucket by McHugh made it 49-48 with 0:09 on the clock. Again, Houston missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and McHugh rebounded at 0:04.6. A double-teamed desperation shot did not come close, and the Hurricanes survived the last-minute scare.

The score was not the only competitive statistic. Both teams had 10 fast-break points, 24 points in the paint and a dozen 2-point field goals. The Lions had six 3-point baskets, Houston seven. The Lions were assessed 11 fouls, Houston 12. Grove had 13 assists, the ‘Canes 12.

Houston (14-12, 13-5 SEC) kept faint hopes alive for a share of the SEC East Division championship, but the next night, Lanesboro (20-6, 14-4 SEC) would wrap up the outright title with a win at last-place Schaeffer Academy. Spring Grove (12-14, 10-8 SEC) finished in third place ahead of Mabel-Canton (7-19, 5-13 SEC) and Schaeffer (6-10, 4-14 SEC).

The ‘Canes extended their winning streak against Spring Grove to 13 games. However, the Lions still dominate all-time with four times as many wins (84) as Houston (21). The Lion B-team girls (9-11), who had previously lost to Houston by 23 points, were much more competitive while dropping the rematch, 27-22. The Hurricanes also won the seventh grade game, 37-11.
