Senior Chris Pieper repeated as the sub-section high jump champion and is one of eight Caledonia/Spring Grove boys to qualify for the May 31 and June 2 Section Track & Field Championships. Both sophomore Josh Beardmore and freshman Fischer Wait advanced in three different events while junior Eric Mauss qualified in two events. Other Warriors qualifying were senior Reid Bjerke plus freshmen Eli Staggemeyer, Owen Staggemeyer and Ethan Stendel. The eight boys have qualified in six events – three sprints, two relays and high jump. The boys had the top two high jumps and three of the four best times in the 200-meter dash. The Sub-section 1 Championships were hosted by Winona Cotter on May 26. In the team standings, the Cal/SG boys entered only 11 of the 18 events and still placed fourth among six teams. With only eight team members, the Warrior girls entered only eight of 18 events and finished sixth among six teams.
Cal/SG competed in Sub-section 1 among four sub-sections in Section 1A. The top six places earn team points and medals. The top three places at sub-section qualify for the section meet. Individuals and relays may also advance by achieving a section standard (time, height or distance). And any athlete whose time, height or distance was among the top eight among all four sub-sections also qualifies.
Wait was runner-up in three events while running personal-record times in both the 200-meter (23.62 seconds) and 400M (52.27) dashes. In the runner-up 4x200M relay, Wait, Mauss Beardmore and Eli Staggemeyer recorded their best time of the year (1:34.57).
The third-place 4x100M relay also moved on with legs run by Bjerke, Beardmore, Mauss and Owen Staggemeyer. Their time of 45.19 seconds was their second-best of the season.
It was a one-two finish in high jump with champion Pieper (6 feet, 3 inches) and runner-up Stendel (a personal-best 5-09). Last year, Pieper won sub-section while clearing 6-01, was section runner-up at the same height and went on to finish sixth at state (6-02). His personal best was 6-05 while winning this year’s conference title.
Also earning sub-section medals and team points with top-six finishes were: Hunter Holland (4th place, 200M dash), Owen Staggemeyer (5th place,100M), Eli Staggemeyer (6th, long jump) and Garrett Ness (6th, shot put).
The highest finish for the Cal/SG girls was the fourth-place 4x100M relay, run by juniors Kloe Jore, Charlese Walk and Ayshia Gay plus eighth grader Loisah Gay. The same quartet placed fifth in the 4x200M relay. Walk had the highest individual finish with a fifth-place, personal-best long jump of 14 feet, 6.25 inches. Freshman Aften Myhre was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles.
