The city of Peterson has just over 100 homes. The city council included nearly 60 in the annual count of holiday-decorated homes. At the December 13 meeting, Councilor Gail Boyum noted 57 displays but expected more to pop up since there are typically around 60. For each home with either a day or nighttime holiday display, including homes displaying decorations through windows, the city donates $5 to the local food shelf. This year’s donation was $300.
The council approved two new business items in the brief meeting, which was minutes long. The first agenda item was a request by the American Legion and the Driftless Trading Post to renew their annual liquor licensure. City Clerk Chris Grindland noted no changes from last year’s submittals for this year’s applications. He also said the annual fee is $440, and it’s been at that rate for some time. He suggested the council review the fee for a potential increase in the next few years.
The other item of business was a request for a gambling permit for a gun raffle put on by the National Wild Turkey Federation-Minnesota and the Rush Creek Longbeards Chapter. The group hosts the event on March 23 at the Peterson American Legion. According to Grindland, the Longbeards held the event at the Legion in 2022. It was a big hit for the city and the organization.
“It brought a lot of people into town,” said Clerk Grindland. “Like, Gammel Dag busy.” The council approved the request unanimously.
In an update from Public Works Director Tim Hallum, the council learned the work to update and heat the city garage behind the post office was complete and the ranger and John Deere tractor are inside. The new mower arrived two weeks ago.
Sentenced to Serve (STS) is finishing up one last project in town for 2023. Hallum expects them to spend one more day in the coming week to finish trimming and cleaning the boulevard trees.
Lastly, parts are coming for city services. The lift station generator is out and Hallum ordered a new board. He expects it to be “up and going” by next week.
Councilor Gail Boym thanked Hallum for his help with the Christmas in Peterson event.
The next regularly scheduled council meeting is Wednesday, January 10, at 6 p.m. at city hall. The public is encouraged to attend.
