The state-ranked No. 8 Spring Grove boys rolled to a 64-24 rematch win over visiting Grand Meadow on Feb. 17, scoring exactly 64 points versus the Superlarks for the second time this season. Including that earlier 64-27 road result, the Lions extended their winning streak against GM to 47 games and lead all-time, 56 wins to 13. Wade Grinde’s guys improved to 22-1 (17-0 SEC).
The Larks (1-23, 1-17 SEC) scored 24 points, just two more than Lion senior Tysen Grinde whose stat line included 22 points, 8 steals, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Elijah Solum added 9 points, Ethan Crouch 8, Jaxon Strinmoen 7 and Logan Brumm 6. Crouch and Dane Edgington each joined Grinde in grabbing 5 rebounds as Spring Grove won the backboard battle as well, 25 to 16.
Both squads shot reasonably well beyond the 3-point arc with the Lions hitting 6 of 17 (35%) and the Larks 4 of 12 (33%). With an 18-to-2 advantage in fast break points, Spring Grove outscored the visitors in the lane, 46-10. The Lions shot 51% from the field overall and GM 34% as Grove achieved 50% or better for the eighth time in 23 games.
The 18 Spring Grove steals accounted for most of the Superlarks’ 24 turnovers. The Lions lost possession only 5 times, their 12th single-digit turnover effort in 23 games. They had only one ball-handling miscue in the first half before taking a 40-9 lead into intermission. With the Grove guys dialing back the defensive pressure after the break, Grand Meadow added 15 points in the second half. Superlark senior guard Jace Kraft scored 12 points, half of his team’s total.
Grand Meadow does not a B-team or a seventh grade team this year. The Lion eighth grade squad (9-8) completed a season sweep, 49-13.
