Nevin Stender obituary, Fillmore County Journal

Nevin W. Stender, age 82, of Spring Valley, passed away peacefully at Spring Valley Care Center on April 22, 2025.  Nevin was born on July 8, 1942, in Wykoff to Walter and Pauline (Duppary) Stender.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wykoff.  He graduated from Wykoff High School in 1960.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army for two years and remained active in the reserves for four years. 

Nevin married Nancy Stickan on June 20, 1964.  Together they had two children, Andrew Paul and Kathy Sue.  He began his working career hauling canned milk until being offered a position working as a Field Rep for Spring Valley Creamery and later for Land O’ Lakes.  He drove a school bus for Spring Valley and Kingsland School Districts for 47 years.  Nevin was active with the Spring Valley Fire Department for 50 years.  During this time he held numerous offices including fire chief.  He was also active in the Tri-County Fire Association holding numerous offices, including president.  Nevin was active in his church, serving on various committees and ushering. 

Nevin is survived by his wife Nancy, two children: Andy (Sheila) Stender and Kathy (Todd) Moore; four grandchildren: Kristen (Tony) Weber, Ryan Stender, Steven Moore and Travis Moore; four great-granddaughters, a brother, Alan; a sister, Suzanne Norris; along with his beloved cat Henry.

Nevin was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Pauline Stender, grandson Riley Owen Moore, and brothers-in-law Charles Stickan and Richard (Dick) Norris.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 28, 2025, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.  Visitation will be on Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 3-5 p.m. at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley, and will continue one hour prior to the start of the service at the church on Monday.
