Fillmore County Journal - Marlys Scheevel Obituary

Marlys Scheevel, 89, of Greenleafton, Minn., died peacefully on Monday, December 14, 2020, at her home at The Evergreens in Spring Valley, Minn.

Marlys was born on December 5, 1931, in Fremont Township in Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Ben and Selma Jacobson. She attended rural school and graduated from Harmony High School.

On May 24, 1952, she married her high school sweetheart Alton Scheevel, at the Fremont Church in Winneshiek County, Iowa. They farmed until retiring and moved to a home south of Greenleafton in 1997.

Marlys was a homemaker, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She was an active member of the Greenleafton Reformed Church and was very active in community events. Marlys was a member of the Root River Artists, and she created numerous artworks and paintings throughout her lifetime.

Marlys is survived by three sons, Lynn (Barb) Scheevel of Preston, Minn., Gary L. (Pat Berg) Scheevel of Florenceville, Iowa, and Marlin Scheevel of Preston, Minn.; a daughter, Debra (Mike) Thompson of Sparta, Wis.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters Shirley Timmerman of Harmony, Minn., and Norma Nelsen of the Twin Cities; and sister-in-law Emily Morgan of Harmony, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Alton Scheevel; two sisters, Stella Larsen and Wilda Middlebrook, and brother Burdette Jacobson.

A private family service will be held for Marlys at Greenleafton Reformed Church, with Pastor Roger Lokker officiating. Burial will be held at Greenleafton Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 18, 2020, from 5-7 p.m. at Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the family will not be present at the public visitation. Masks are required and social distancing will be enforced.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Greenleafton Reformed Church at 15502 Co Hwy 9, Preston, Minn. 55965, or to the Hindt Funeral Home at 316 N. Broadway, Spring Valley, Minn. 55975.
